Piotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky
"1812" Overture in E Flat Major Op. 49 (1880)
Though far from Tchaikovsky's most important or impressive work, the "1812 Overture" is undoubtedly his best known piece. Tchaikovsky himself didn't feel much enthusiasm for the work while he was composing it, and if it were not for a lucrative commission for a ceremonial overture to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812, it is unlikely that Tchaikovsky would have composed the overture on his own initiative. Tchaikovsky worked on the overture from October 12 to November 19, 1880. In his own words, he found it "very loud and noisy." The commission was to mark the 1882 Moscow Exhibition, and specifically the consecration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior which was built there to give thanks for the Russian victory during the Napoleonic Wars. The premiere was duly given on August 20, 1882 and was an immediate success. It was subsequently published as his Op. 49 and enjoyed many performances throughout Russia. Its popularity has never waned. Tchaikovsky even conducted a performance of the in 1893, his last year. The response was raucous. In 1974, lamenting the declining audiences attending the Boston Pops concerts at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the picturesque Charles River Esplanade - a tradition dating back to 1929 - Boston businessman, David Mugar and the legendary Boston Pops conductor, Arthur Fiedler, hatched a plan to enliven the concert. The crowd responded so enthusiastically to the revitalized program, the pair made it an annual event. The enthusiasm was due in no small part to the concert's featuring the "1812 Overture." The musical program featured booming cannons, ringing church bells, patriotic sing-a-longs, and a grand fireworks finale. The Boston event became the first to play the overture as part of a Fourth of July celebration. The innovation has since been duplicated in countless cities around the country.

Symphonies
Besides the works listed above, Tchaikovsky also planned two more symphonies. In June and July 1873 he noted down two themes in his diary for a Symphony in B flat major TH 210 ); this project was quickly abandoned, although one of the themes was used a few months later in the Capriccioso for solo piano, Op. 19, No. 5 (1874). During his tour of America in April 1891, Tchaikovsky began to note down themes and a programme for a symphony entitled Life [Zhizn']. Work on other projects meant that he never began to sketch the work fully, but some of the themes were incorporated into the Symphony in E flat major , which he began and abandoned the following year.

COMPOSERS
PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY
Born: May 7, 1840. Kamsko-Votkinsk, Russia
Died: November 6, 1893. St. Petersburg, Russia
In his own words...

"How can one express the indefinable sensations that one experiences while writing an instrumental composition that has no definite subject? It is a purely lyrical process. It is a musical confession of the soul, which unburdens itself through sounds just as a lyric poet expresses himself through poetry... As the poet Heine said, 'Where words leave off, music begins.' " Russian composer. Tchaikovsky is best known for his ballets and symphonies.
In many ways, Tchaikovsky's life and career placed him uncomfortably between different worlds, and this conflict was a central aspect of his creative life. Perhaps this can be seen most clearly in his position as a Russian composer. Russia had a long history of cultural contact with the West. The very European city of St. Petersburg is the greatest example of this dynamic. Tchaikovsky's musical training at the newly founded St. Petersburg conservatory was likewise influenced by European ideals. His success in his studies there landed him a job as a teacher in the new Moscow conservatory. As a member of the musical elite of Russia, he found that his music pleased few. It was too advanced and modern for his Western-trained peers, and at the same time too Western in its outlook to please the growing and influential champions of a Russian national style.
He did begin to find favor with the Russian public, especially with his first symphonies. At the same time, his homosexuality also placed him in an untenable position. Unable to come to terms with it, he married an admirer, hoping to resolve his problems in domestic life. This proved a bitter failure, and in desperation he fled both the marriage and his post at the conservatory. He was fortunate to have at this time the support of the eccentric Nadezhda von Meck, allowing him to recover emotionally and continue his career, touring Europe and America. This period of despair is framed by two periods of great creativity. Before the crisis, he had written many of his most famous works, including his first three symphonies, the ballet

Tchaikovsky

The eminent Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on May 7 (N.S.), 1840, in a settlement adjacent to the Kama-Votkinsk Metal Works (managed by his father) in the Ural Mountains. The first mention of his involvement with music appears in a letter of 1844 that reports him as having helped compose a song, "Mama's in Petersburg." At home he heard folk songs, popular arias, and romances sung by his mother, and pieces played by a mechanical organ, among them excerpts from Mozart's Don Giovanni . (Mozart would remain Tchaikovsky's most beloved composer.) Piano lessons, started about the age of five, continued in Saint Petersburg, where he entered boarding school in 1848.
From 1850 to 1859 he attended the School of Jurisprudence, where he assisted in a choir conducted by Gavriil Lomakin and studied piano with Rudolph Kundinger and harmony with Kundinger's brother. Assigned on graduation to the Ministry of Justice, Tchaikovsky continued to be drawn to music, and in 1861 he began classes sponsored by the Russian Music Society. The year after, he left his job and entered the just-founded Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Working zealously under Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Zaremba, he received a Silver Medal for his graduation cantata on Johann Schiller's

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) In time Tchaikovsky's music became more accepted in Russia. When his former benefactor stopped his allowance after 13 years, he was soon the beneficiary of funding from the Russian government. He even overcame his previous reluctance both to travel and to conduct. He travelled abroad to conduct his own music in European cities and in the US to great success. However his life was to end in tragedy. The official story is that he contacted Cholera (the same disease which had struck his mother years before) by carelessly drinking a glass of unboiled water, though a later story suggested that he committed suicide. Shortly before he died, Tchaikovsky had completed his 6th Symphony. The premier was not a great critical success, but the mood of the piece seems prophetic with a mood of the deepest despair. Tchaikovsky's music: Tchaikovsky has left us a wealth of great music including Symphonies and Concertos, some Operas and many shorter works. He is particularly remembered for his story-telling music, including the "Romeo and Juliet" overture and the evocative free-flowing ballet music for "Swan Lake", "The Nutcracker" and "Sleeping Beauty". Among the many familiar pieces from The Nutcracker is the Sugar Plum Fairy and you can download the Sheet Music or Midi File of this work.

RUSSICUM
RUSSICUM is a part of the St Petersburg Choir Community NEVA Russicum, which was set up in 1992 by Prof. Andrey Ovechkin, Olga Romanovskaya, Robert Shervenikas, Valeri Vinogradov and Boris Kozin (the present director of the choir). The Community now comprises about 40 professional singers with many years of experience as soloists and/or choir conductors. It has no connection whatever with any state authorities or other organisations in Russia. RUSSICUM ensembles are a capella (voice only) groups of five talented soloists from St Petersburg and Kiev. These groups help each other to promote traditional and contemporary Russian religious songs, as a part of the cultural heritage of Europe, to a broader international public, and their tours in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Scandinavia, USA and the UK have generated a wide circle of friends and supporters. They also assist each other in the planning, preparation and organization of international cultural exchanges and the tours of the particular ensembles. In Russia the choir members sing as soloists in various parishes or work as church choir conductors in the service of the Russian Orthodox church, including the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan in the Nevsky Prospekt of St Petersburg. At home the preservation of the original traditions of the Russian vocal school as well as the encouragement of young singers in the field of Christian music are the principal goals of the groups. A special concern is to show the continuity of liturgical music from early times to the present day.

S hakespeare, the Battle of Borodino and Dante were the sources for three of Tchaikovsky's most popular orchestral works recorded here. He was somewhat nagged into Romeo and Juliet as a subject by Mily Balakirev, a fellow- composer given to organising the musical lives of others, and the result in its first version was not very successfully premiered at Moscow on 14 March 1870, a few weeks before Tchaikovsky's 30th birthday. It was later twice revised before it began to win the widespread acclaim that has at times obscured its intrinsic musical merits. Although styled a 'Fantasy-Overture', the overall design is a symphonic poem in sonata-form with an introduction and an epilogue. It opens with the solemn thoughts of Friar Laurence, and the main part of the work is a contrast between the vivid depiction of street-brawls between the feuding families and the eloquently emotional theme of the tragically appointed love of the title figures.
The music illuminates the essence of the tale, its harmonic subtlety used to build and resolve tension, while the forceful irregular rhythms of the street music point ahead to Stravinsky and beyond.
