Germaine Tailleferre
Holder of the Paris Conservatory’s highest awards, staunchly allied to her friends Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger, she was called upon by Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau to be part of the "Group of Six" (along with Poulenc, Auric, and Durey). These young composers, with Cocteau’s encouragement, rebelled against the impressionistic "fog" and the Wagnerian "pathos". Their inspration included popular and traditional musical forms. In Germaine Tailleferre one always finds a respect for musical tradition, in particular that of the 17th century masters, along with an instinctive use of polytonality. A friend of Stravinsky, Diaghilev, Ravel, Chaplin, Picasso, and a collaborator of the greatest writers of her time, in particular Claudel, Valéry, Ionesco, Soupault, Tardieu...Germaine Tailleferre’s optimistic music has captivated the most celebrated musicians: Ricardo Vinès, Marguerite Long, Arthur Rubinstein, Jacques Thibaud, Alfred Cortot, Lily Laskine, Nicanor Zabaleta... and prestigious conductors such as Pierre Monteux, Thomas Beecham, Léopold Stokowski, Serge Koussevitzky, Willem Mengelberg. She left behind her, at the end of a long creative life, some 400 works, piano and chamber music, symphonic works, ballets, operas, film music and melodies. She was an officier of the Legion of Honour, holder of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, the Music Prize of the Academy of Arts, the musical Grand Prix of the City of Paris.

Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983) Germaine Tailleferre was the one woman of Les Six and is today one of the less well known members of the group, though unjustly so. Tailleferre was associated directly with Auric, Honegger and Milhaud in Cocteau's satirical Les mariés de la Tour Eiffel . Influenced by the clarity and simplicity of Satie and by her teacher Ravel, she wrote music that later ventured into explorations of new techniques without ever deserting her original inspiration. She was also a student of Darius Milhaud, and was one of the latecomers to Les Six Always modest and lacking assertiveness about her work, she summed up her talent as follows: "I write music because it amuses me. It's not great music, I know, but it's gay, light-hearted music which is sometimes compared with that of the 'petits maitres' of the 18th century. And that makes me very proud."

It was her artistic connections, which by 1917 also included Picasso and Modigliani, however which lead to her initial success It was in the Montparnasse atelier of one of her painter friends where the initial concert of the "Nouveaux Jeunes" took place, which also included Francis Poulenc and Louis Durey on January 15, 1918, with Tailleferre's Jeux de Pleine Aire as well as her Sonatine for String Quartet, which was later to become the String Quartet (with the addition of a third movement). The publication of Jean Cocteau's manifest for a typically French Music Le Coq et L'Harlequin in 1918 paved the way for Henri Collet's articles in 1920 in the French journal Commedia. It was also Collet who choose the name Les Six , in direct reference to the Five Russians of the 19th century nationalist movement. These two articles, which appeared in January of 1920, lead to overnight fame for the famous group Des Six, which only officially participated in one project together, an album of Piano works. The six musicians remained close for the rest of their lives, however.
