As a youth in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Billy Strayhorn received an extensive training in music. In December 1938, he submitted a composition to Duke Ellington , who was so impressed by the young man's talent that three months later he recorded Strayhorn's Something to Live For with the composer as pianist. Four more of Strayhorn's pieces were recorded during 1939 including I'm Checkin' Out Goo'm Bye and Grievin' by Ellington, and Barney Goin' Easy and Lost in Two Flats by Barney Bigard, as well as a work by Ellington written as a tribute, Weely (a Portrait of Billy Strayhorn) . After serving briefly as a pianist in Mercer Ellington's orchestra, Strayhorn joined Duke Ellington's band as associate arranger and second pianist, and for nearly three decades worked in close collaboration with the leader. The two men were so attuned to one another musically, and Strayhorn's work was such a perfect complement to Ellington's, that it is now impossible to establish the exact extent of the former's contribution to Ellington's oeuvre. Their relationship was described in flattering terms by Ellington in his autobiography (1973). Strayhorn collaborated on more than 200 items in Ellington's repertory, including such standards as

WILLIAM THOMAS STRAYHORN The history, of the family of William Thomas Strayhorn (his mother called him "Bill") goes back over a hundred years in Hillsborough. One set of great grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Craig, lived behind the present Farmer*s Exchange. A great grand-mother was the cook for Robert E. Lee. Billy, however, was born in Dayton. Ohio in 1915. His mother, Lillian Young Strayhorn, brought her children to Hillsborough often. Billy was attracted to the piano that his grandmother, Elizabeth Craig Strayhorn owned. He played it from the moment he was tall enough to reach the keys. Even in those early years, when he played, his family would gather to listen and sing. In 1923 Billy entered the first grade in a little wooden school house, since destroyed. Soon after that, however, his mother moved her family to Pittsburgh to join Billy*s father, James Nathaniel Strayhorn. Mr. Strayhorn had gotten a job there as a gas-maker and wire-puller. Charlotte Catlin began to give Billy private piano lessons. He played the piano everyday, sometimes becoming so engrossed that he would be late for his job. He also played in the high school band.

Strayhorn, Billy,
byname of WILLIAM THOMAS STRAYHORN (b. Nov. 29, 1915, Dayton, Ohio, U.S.d. May 31, 1967, New York, N.Y.), American pianist and composer who spent his entire career in collaboration with and as amanuensis to the composer and bandleader Duke Ellington Educated privately, Strayhorn applied to Ellington in 1938 for work as a lyricist, using his own composition "Lush Life" as a credential. In 1939 Ellington made his first recording of a Strayhorn composition; it was the first of many, including the highly popular "Take the 'A' Train" and "Chelsea Bridge," an excellent example of the composer's refined, impressionistic style. Strayhorn was also an accomplished pianist who rarely did justice to his own talent. His work as a composer became so intertwined with Ellington's that it was said that eventually neither man was able to distinguish his own contributions to their joint work. Strayhorn worked on most of Ellington's major concert works and unquestionably exerted a great influence upon him.

Strayhorn, Billy
Born: Nov 29, 1915 in Dayton, OH
Died: May 31, 1967 in New York, NY
Genres: Jazz
Styles: Swing
Instruments: Composer, Arranger, Piano
An extravagantly gifted composer, arranger and pianist — some considered him a genius — Billy Strayhorn toiled throughout most of his maturity in the gaudy shadow of his employer, collaborator and friend, Duke Ellington Duke Ellington song.
Still, among musicians and jazz fans, Strayhorn is renowned for acknowledged classics like "Lotus Blossom," "Lush Life," "Rain Check," "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing" and "Mid-Riff." While tailored for the Ellington idiom, Strayhorn's pieces often have their own bittersweet flavor, and his larger works have coherent, classically influenced designs quite apart from those of Ellington. Strayhorn was alternately content with and frustrated by his second-fiddle status, and he was also one of the few openly gay figures in jazz, which probably added more stress to his life.
Classical music was Strayhorn's first and lifelong musical love. He started out as a child prodigy, gravitating to Victrolas as a child, working odd jobs in order to buy a used upright piano while in grade school. He studied harmony and piano in high school, writing the music for a professional musical, Fantastic Rhythm, at 19. But the realities of a black man trying to make it in the then-lily-white classical world, plus exposure to pianists like Art Tatum and Teddy Wilson, led Strayhorn toward jazz; he gigged around Pittsburgh with a combo called the Mad Hatters. Through a friend of a friend, Strayhorn gained an introduction to
