Igor Stravinsky
Russian/international composer who began two of the major strains of contemporary music. He studied with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov , and his early works, like the Symphony No. 1 in E Flat , show the influence of that master. Almost immediately, however, he began to incline toward the music of the French impressionists Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel , while retaining his nationalist outlook. This resulted in such pieces as Fireworks The Faun and the Shepherdess , and the major ballet Firebird . It was not a simple matter of combining, however. A new musical element entered the mixclean orchestral textures, "bright" instrumentation, and an emphasis on stamping, irregular rhythmsheard especially in the Firebird 's "Infernal Dance of the King Katschei." Firebird 's success led to two more ballets for Diaghilev's Ballets russes: Petrouchka and Le Sacre du Printemps , both landmarks of twentieth-century music. The Russian element becomes less Romantic and more "objectified." By Le Sacre , the "infernal" element of Firebird had erupted into a previously-unheard, epic "barbarism," so much so that some of the audience rioted at the Paris premiere. The score became an icon of musical modernism and influenced many other modern giants, including

Igor Fedorovich Stravinsky was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. The son of a famous bass singer at the Imperial Opera, Stravinsky showed little inclination to pursue a musical career until, while a law student, he began to study composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Stravinsky was catapulted into the musical limelight with the composition of three ballets for the Ballets Russes de Serge Diaghilev in Paris: Firebird Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913). The latter work caused a celebrated scandal at its first performance and remains one of the best-known and most influential pieces of 20th-century music. During World War I, Stravinsky lived in Switzerland, and shortly afterward he settled in France. His creative association with Diaghilev continued until 1929 and included notable collaborations with Pablo Picasso and Leonid Massine ( Pulcinella , 1920), Jean Cocteau ( Oedipus Rex , 1927), and George Balanchine ( Apollon Musagete , 1928). In 1939 he moved to the United States.

They arrived in Montreux , on the banks of Lake Geneva , the summer of 1910. After having stayed in the Pension des Tilleuls, at the Hôtel du Châtelard and then the Hôtel Des Crêtes, the family finally settled into the Pervenche villa, the former home of Ernest Ansermet. Meanwhile Stravinsky had been stranded in Switzerland by the outbreak of hostilities. “It seems,” he had written to Andrei Rimsky-Korsakov in 1912 whilst working on The Rite of Spring, “as if not two but twenty years have passed since The Firebird was composed.” What must he have felt in August 1914? A mere five years earlier he had been an all but unknown Russian composer, living and working in his native St. Petersburg, a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, certainly, but with no major successes to his name. Though his music had been played – thanks to the good offices of his teacher – he had had no independent recognition until Serge Diaghilev heard two of his orchestral works in February 1909 and decided to commission some arrangements from him for the 1909 Paris season of the Ballets Russes. Not until the autumn did the crucial Firebird commission materialise.
Soon afterwards Chester brought out the vocal score of Pulcinella (1919, but not the full score, which was still in composer’s hands when he signed his ERM contract in 1923), the Piano Rag Music (1919) and the Three Pieces for Clarinet (1918-19). The little piano pieces Les Cinq Doigts (1921) followed in 1922, and the Four Russian Songs (1918-19) in 1923, the year in which Les Noces was at last performed and published in full score. On the other hand Kling resisted the two radical works of 1920, the Concertino for string quartet (which went to Edition Wilhelm Hansen in Copenhagen, and so came back to Chester under the agency umbrella), and the Symphonies of Wind Instruments which, with its awkward instrumentation and forbidding yet no longer topical Russianism, remained unloved even by ERM, who spent fifteen years pretending to publish it before war once again put them out of their misery.

Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress The Rake's Progress inspired by a set of engravings by William Hogarth that have no resemblance to Immendorff's staging. There have been first-class productions that respected Hogarth's vision. One of them is sure to find its way to home video eventually, and those who are upset by visual tampering with an opera's original concept might want to wait. But the Salzburg audience applauds it thoroughly in this production. Stravinsky's music is well handled. Jerry Hadley brings both pathos and humor to the title role, Dawn Upshaw puts a lot of personality into the rather bland, goody-goody role of Anne, and they have an expert supporting cast. Summary: The is the One to Have!
Comment : So far this 1996 Salzburg Festival production of 'The Rake's Progress', Stravinsky's 'Mozartian opera,' is the only one to make it to DVD. But frankly I don't think you need look any further; from the opening scene set in Tom's painter's studio (with Anne as his demure model) to the amusingly staged epilog that is an homage to that of 'Don Giovanni,' the production never flags, impelled smoothly by the alert conducting of Sylvain Cambreling. The production, conceived and directed by Peter Mussbach with set/costume design by Jörg Immendorff, goes from triumph to triumph. The stage action, scenery and costumes, although not always immediately clear in intent, are colorful, amusing, always engaging.

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Lomonosov, 17 June 1882; died New York, 6 April 1971).
Russian composer, later of French (1934) and American (1945) nationality. The son of a leading bass at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, he studied with Rimsky-Korsakov (1902-8), who was an influence on his early music, though so were Tchaikovsky , Borodin, Glazunov and (from 1907-8) Debussy and Dukas. This colourful mixture of sources lies behind The Firebird (1910), commissioned by Dyagilev for his Ballets Russes. Stravinsky went with the company to Paris in 1910 and spent much of his time in France from then onwards, continuing his association with Dyagilev in Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring These scores show an extraordinary development. Both use folktunes, but not in any symphonic manner: Stravinsky's forms are additive rather than symphonic, created from placing blocks of material together without disguising the joins. The binding energy is much more rhythmic than harmonic, and the driving pulsations of The Rite marked a crucial change in the nature of Western music. Stravinsky, however, left it to others to use that change in the most obvious manner. He himself, after completing his Chinese opera

Stravinsky, Igor (1882 - 1971)
The son of a distinguished Russian singer, Stravinsky spent his earlier years in Russia, either in St. Petersburg or, in the summer, at the country estates of his relatives. He studied music briefly with Rimsky-Korsakov but made a name for himself first in Paris with commissions from the impresario Dyagilev, for whom he wrote a series of ballet scores. He spent the years after the Russian Revolution of 1917 in Western Europe and in 1939 moved to the United States of America. There in the post- war years he turned from a style of eclectic neo-classicism to composing in the twelve-note technique propounded by Schoenberg. A versatile composer, inventive in changing styles, he may be seen as the musical counterpart of the painter Picasso. Stage Works Recommended Recordings Firebird Suite / Petrushka Suite
