Eduard Strauss E duard Strauss, son of Johann Strauss I, brother of Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss, and the last leader of the Strauss Orchestra was a pompous, dictatorial person, who loved wearing his medals. H e was born in Vienna on 15 March 1835, Eduard's talent for languages initially suggested he was bound for a career with the Austrian consular service. His destiny lay elsewhere, however, and on 11 February 1855 he made his debut with the Strauss Orchestra as a harpist, though he also played the violin. Dogged by nervousness, his career as a harpist quickly evaporated, but an alternative vocation as a conductor proved much more successful. Hij was het 5e kind uit het gezin van Johann Strauss Senior. Hij was bestemd voor de diplomatie, maar gaf het plan op toen zijn broers Johann en Josef hun handen meer dan vol hadden met hun orkesten. Zo dirigeerde hij voor het eerst in februari 1859, toen de Straussen met hun drie orkesten in de zalen van het Dianabad te wenen optraden. E duard Strauss ging zoals zijn broer Josef deed, studeren bij Amon en bij Gottfried Preyer, kapelmeester van 'Sint Stephan'. Als Komponist stand Strauß deutlich hinter seinen Brüdern und seinem Vater zurück, weshalb er in großer Verbitterung das handschriftliche Notenarchiv des Vaters und der Brüder vernichtete. E duard Strauß erreichte das Niveau seiner älteren Brüder nie ganz. Er war ein tüchtiger Kapellmeister, dessen Ruhm durch einen unglaublichen Akt des Vandalismus überschattet wird. 1907 läßt er, unter Berufung auf eine angebliche Übereinkunft mit Joseph, das gesamte, drei Wagenladungen umfassende Notenarchiv der Straußkapelle verbrennen.
