William Grant Still; Still Living a Dream Karmen Temple Imagine following your passion. Would you have a better chance at living up to your dreams, upon having had a spiritual awakening? Or, would you surely succeed if you had made a promise to live your dream, and the pay off was that you would improve race relations in America? Could you stand up to adversity in a field where you know that you are not welcome? These tremendous feats for one lifetime encompass the achievements of African American composer, William Grant Still. At a time when blacks were barely allowed in the realm of music, he broke new ground, forging ahead in opera and classical music. A lecture, given at SMC, about his legacy was entitled "A Voice High Sounding," an appropriate proclamation as William Grant Still's music is about his voice and his dream being released for all who are willing to hear. Unfortunately, his voice has been stifled by what his daughter, Judith Still relates as "prejudice, bigotry and racism." Judith Still serves as a representative for William Grant Still Music and addressed the College prior to a multicultural music concert by the Santa Monica Orchestra. William Grant Still (1895-1978) was an important trailblazer in American orchestral music; he was one of the first composers of modernist music. Grant was the first African-American composer to achieve significant attention in the national arena. In 1931, his Afro-American Symphony was the first symphony composed by an African-American to be performed by a major orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic. And, in 1936, he was the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Classically Black: William Grant Still
Listen to this program William Grant Still: A Centennial Tribute features a generous sampling of Still's works, as well as an intimate discussion with Judith Anne Still, daughter of the man often called "the Dean of Negro Composers." Still achieved many "firsts" in his career: he was the first African American in the United States to have a symphony performed by a major symphony orchestra, the first African American to conduct a major symphony orchestra in the Deep South, the first African American to have an opera produced by a major U.S. opera company. The program is the fifth in the Classically Black series, produced by WILL-FM’s Roger Cooper and distributed nationally by Public Radio International. Cooper said the series was created to fill a void in programming. While many programs about black jazz or blues artists were available, there were none featuring black classical artists, he said. MENC: The National Association for Music Education Heroes Gallery WILLIAM GRANT STILL
May 11, 1895 - December 3, 1978 William Grant Still is often referred to as “The Dean of African-American Composers.” His interest in orchestral music began with the violin, which he took up at an early age, and continued through his formal music education as he continued to learn as much as possible about all of the instruments of the orchestra. With this knowledge and love for the orchestra, he embarked on a career as a performer and composer of orchestral music. His compositions include symphonies, ballets, operas, soundtrack scores, and chamber music. Still gained much acclaim through his efforts to have his Symphony No. 1 performed by a major American orchestra, no small accomplishment for an African-American in the early 20th century. As he gained national respect for his talent and as his music became part of the musical repertoire of many major orchestras, Still continued pursuing his desire to not only compose for the orchestra, but to conduct his music as well. This led him to his first conducting position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His operas were later produced by several major companies and were the first ever operas by an African-American composer to be aired on national television. Still’s success as a composer and conductor paved the way for other “composers of color” to find success in American classical music.

"A tough mixture of courage and diplomacy, the material presented here could hardly be richer."Susan McClary, author of Feminine Endings DESCRIPTION (back to top) During the 1930s and 1940s William Grant Still (1895-1978) was known as the "Dean of Afro-American Composers." He worked as an arranger for early radio, on Broadway, and in Hollywood; major symphony orchestras performed his concert works; and an opera, written in collaboration with Langston Hughes, was produced by the New York City Opera. Despite these successes the composer's name gradually faded into obscurity. This book brings William Grant Still out of the archives and examines his place in America's musical heritage. It also provides a revealing window into our recent cultural past. Until now Still's profound musical creativity and cultural awareness have been obscured by the controversies that dogged much of his personal and professional life. New topics explored by Catherine Parsons Smith and her contributors include the genesis of the
