Levee Land, William Grant Still and Florence Mills 36 Gundara St Aranda Australia 2614 Levee Land, William Grant Still and Florence Mills Introduction On Sunday evening January 24 1926 an event occurred at the Aeolian Hall, New York which was, in several respects, a significant landmark in the Harlem Renaissance but has since been largely forgotten. On that night the International Composers’ Guild presented a concert which included a performance by the black Broadway star Florence Mills. She sang a group of four jazz-based songs under the title Levee Land . These had been specially composed for the occasion by William Grant Still, a rising young African-American classical composer. The concert included several other notable features: Florence Mills was conducted by Eugene Goossens in what was reported as his first encounter with jazz; Ottorino Respighi made his debut as a conductor, while his wife made her American debut as a concert singer; and a new sonata, by Italian enfant terrible Vittorio Rieti, was presented. Nevertheless, it was certainly the Mills-Still collaboration that inspired the large attendance and the enthusiastic response from the press and audience. To explain why this was so, it is necessary to relate something of the careers and friendship of William Grant Still and Florence Mills.

Grant Still
On this date, William Grant Still was born in 1895. From Woodville, Mississippi and reared in Little Rock, Arkansas; he was an African-American composer and musician.
William Grant Still and his first wife Grace Bundy had four children. Still took a break from his musical studies at Oberlin during World War I to join the Navy. At this time the only job available to African-Americans in the Navy was mess attendant. Yet, despite this discriminatory treatment, he and many other African-Americans chose to reinforce their claim on democracy and freedom and fight for liberty overseas, although they did not have full freedom at home. During his tour of duty, he was relieved of some of his mess responsibilities to perform for officers' meals after it was discovered that he could play the violin.
Still was the first African-American to conduct a major symphony orchestra, the first African-American to have an opera, Troubled Island (1949), performed by a major opera company, and the first to have an opera, A Bayou Legend, performed on national television (1981). The period from 1926 to the early 1940s was Still's most prolific. During this time he wrote Levee Land (1925); a suite for orchestra and soprano that combines traditional western musical elements with jazz; From the Black Belt (1926); a work for chamber orchestra based on seven short character sketches; Sahdji (1930); a choral ballet based on an African story, and Afro-American Symphony.

William Grant Still’s most celebrated work, the African-American Symphony of 1930, blends negro spirituals with glittering orchestrations to form a work of great character and individuality. As Howard Hanson stated, " William Grant Still brought to American music a new voice, a voice filled with lovely melodies and gorgeous harmonies, insidious rhythms, and dazzling colors." Amy Beach’s "Gaelic" Symphony of 1934 is likewise a work that appeals to both mind and heart, seamlessly incorporating Irish folk tunes into its late-Romantic world. These prestigious recordings have been newly re-mastered, giving these already impressive releases new detail and beauty.

Still Oh, gee, I enjoyed it greatly. That is a brilliant beginning. S What were some of the activities on the program?
Still They showed what the young people are contributing and what they have gained in their studies. They came through with flying colors. Those kids are certainly well trained. The conducting was good and on the whole, it was a very fine program. S All right, Dr. Still, could you tell us something about your early life, where you were born, something about your parents and your brothers and/or sisters?
Still I was born in Mudville, Miss., May 11, 1895. Both my mother and father were teachers and after they married they moved to Woodville Miss. They had lived before in Huntsville Alabama, and both of them taught at normal school there. Mr. Konsel, I think, was the head of the school. Then they moved, both my mother and my father, they married and moved to Woodville. Now, it was a fortunate thing for me that they were both interested in things, reading books is more or less of a nature whose function it is to teach young people new things. S How many children were there in the family?

African American Review
Summer, 1998 by B.A. Nugent
Judith Anne Still, Michael J. Dabrishus, and Carolyn L. Quin. Westport: Greenwood P, 1996. 331 pp. $85.00. Reviewed by B. A. Nugent University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Prior to earning his station of prominence in concert halls, William Grant Still developed his craft as an arranger and orchestrator for such notables as Paul Whiteman, Artie Shaw, W. C. Handy, Bix Beiderbecke, Bing Crosby, Earl Carroll, and Sophie Tucker. His scores were heard "coast-to-coast" over an adolescent medium called radio on such programs as Deep River Hour, Old Gold Show, Maxwell House Coffee Show, and the Bell Telephone Hour. When his transition to the concert hall was, in his mind, less than complete, Still elected to compose under the pseudonym Willie M. Grant. With the exception of uncompleted curricula at Wilberforce and Oberlin and brief periods of compositional study with George W. Chadwick and Edgard Varese, Still was, for the most part, self-taught. Like Edward Elgar and others, he learned to compose and orchestrate by playing several instruments and by experimenting with the combinations of sounds and colors available to him. He learned valuable lessons by playing violin, flute, violoncello, clarinet, and oboe in combos and orchestras such as that of Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle.

American Music Teacher

To glean the essence of William Grant Still's contributions to American music, it will be useful to capture briefly the views expressed during the formative years of this country's nationhood about the creativity of African-Americans. Thomas Jefferson, for example, wrote: But never yet could I find that a black had uttered a thought above the level of plain narration; never saw even an elementary trait of painting or sculpture. In music they are more generously gifted than the whites with accurate ears for tune and time, and they have been found capable of imagining a small catch. (The instrument proper to them is the Banjar, which they brought hither from Africa, and which is the original of the guitar, its chords being precisely the four lower chords of the guitar.) Whether they will be equal to the composition of a more extensive run (melody, or of complicated harmony, is yet to be proved. (1) Let us fast forward to the early twentieth century and hear from another prominent Virginian, the composer and pianist John Powell, writing under his pseudonym, Richard Brockwell. He expressed the following thoughts:

and is a member of the MarcoPolo Partnership A man of many talents, William Grant Still renounced his medical studies to pursue a career in music. He taught himself to play every instrument in the orchestra, from violin to cello and from oboe to saxophone. The scale of his musical knowledge paved the way for Still to become a skilled and prolific composer. In 1931, with the premiere performance of Still's Afro-American Symphony , he became the first African-American composer to write a symphony performed by an American orchestra. Over the next 20 years, 38 orchestras in the United States and Europe would have the honor of playing Afro-American Symphony Still is best known as a composer, but he played a range of other roles in the music industry. In 1916, for example, he served as an arranger for blues musician W. C. Handy. In New York, Still played alongside jazz greats Fletcher Henderson and James P. Johnson in the Harlem Symphony. He later was named music director of the Black Swan jazz label, a subsidiary of Harry Pace's Phonograph Company, which billed itself as "The Only Genuine Colored Record."

Monica Gaylord has the subtlety of touch this predominantly gentle recital requires. While she's perfectly capable of ringing out the splashy final numbers of the Colridge Taylor and Dett sets, she's at her most impressive exacting the delicate impressionistic colors from Still's Traceries or coaxing out rhythms of Ellington's Come Sunday. Fine sound and erudite notes by the pianist only add to the attractions. A first-rate reissue. Fanfare : March/April, 1999: Peter J. Rabinowitz
