By Dr. Edith Borroff

SUNY Binghamton (Retired)
Still had gone to Wilberforce University (Ohio), a pre-med student as his mother wished, but he became more and more involved in musical matters until he could no longer deny that profession. It was as a family renegade that Still entered the musical world. Worse than that (for his mother), he affiliated himself with composer/produced/publisher W.C. Handy, who is remembered as the "Father of the Blues" and an important influence on popular music in the 20th century. In each of three phases of his career, Still was very much in a time and a place that defined his thinking. First was the training period, a full apprenticeship served in several places. He received instruction wherever he found it and in a wide scope of styles, from Handy to Chadwick and Varese. This background made Still one of few American composers who have achieved recognition without advanced study or a teaching career in an academic setting. The second phase was in New York, where he led two lives: that of an arranger and performer in popular music, and that of a composer of concert music. This phase culminated in his decision to investigate his African heritage and to being African musical ideals into his concert music; he composed the ballet

Following the death of Still's father when William was only a few months old, the family moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where the young Still began has musical education with violin lessons from a private teacher and a stack of Red Seal opera recordings bought for him by his stepfather. Still received a B.S. degree from Wilberforce University, spending his time there conducting the band and learning to play the various instruments in it as he made his first attempts to compose and orchestrate. His subsequent studies at Oberlin Conservatory of Music were financed at first through his father's legacy, and later through a scholarship established just for him by the faculty.

Alain Locke Correspondence
Alain Locke (b. September 13, 1885 Philadelphia, Pa. d. Washington, D.C. 1954) is best known for his involvement with the Harlem Renaissance, although his work and influence extend well beyond. Through The New Negro , published in 1925, Locke popularized and most adequately defined the Renaissance as a movement in black arts and letters. His interest and writings cover a wide range of topics, including philosophy, music, art, literature, anthropology, political theory, sociology, and African Studies. Besides his chairing and teaching in the Department of Philosophy at Howard University, he spent a great deal of time advising and encouraging many African American artists in various fields. This letter touches on several issues, including the development of black musicians and schools such as Fisk or Howard; ideas for setting Mrs. Biddle's (Katharine Garrison Chapin) poem on lynching (which would later develop into Still's cantata, And They Lynched Him On a Tree ) to music and informs him that Mrs. Biddle will get in touch with him. He also mentions that her brother-in-law, George Biddle, is the unpublicized friend responsible for the federal art idea with President Roosevelt.

Though a prolific composer of operas, ballets, symphonies, and other works, he was best known for his Afro-American Symphony Still was brought up by his mother and grandmother in Little Rock, Ark., and studied medicine at Wilberforce University, Ohio, before turning to music. He first studied composition at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, then under the conservative George W. Chadwick at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston, and later under Edgard Varèse during the latter's most radical avant-garde period. The diversity of Still's musical education was extended when, in the 1920s, he worked as an arranger for the dance-band leader Paul Whiteman and for the blues composer W.C. Handy . In 1939 he married and settled in Los Angeles. Early orchestral works include Darker America (1924) and From the Black Belt (1926) for chamber orchestra.

The William Grant Still and Verna Arvey Papers
Description from the Special Collections Brochure Series
William Grant Still left his papers to the University of Arkansas Libraries in his will. Some materials were transferred to the Special Collections Division before his death, and the remainder of the collection came after the death of his widow, Verna Arvey, in 1987. Arrangement and description of the Still-Arvey papers were supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The collection (finding aid available online) is a rich resource documenting the lives and careers of Still and Arvey, and includes musical scores, literary manuscripts, correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, a log of performances of Still's compositions, and dream books for both Still and Arvey. In addition, the collection contains sheet music, audio recordings, photographs, and books. The Still-Arvey collection covers most of the twentieth century, from 1920 to 1988. Because Still and Arvey were active participants in the cultural life of their times, and because of Still's stature in the African-American community, the collection has value for research in music, musicology, literature, cultural history, and African-American studies. Since the arrival of the first increment of the Still papers at the University of Arkansas, researchers have shown considerable interest in the collection. Their works include theses and dissertations, biographies of William Grant Still and Langston Hughes, and numerous articles and academic papers.
