He also edited the Petrie Collection of Irish Music He was appointed professor of composition and orchestral playing at the Royal College of Music in 1883 and professor of music at Cambridge in 1887, and held both posts until his death. He was a gifted teacher, and many of his pupils later became distinguished musicians; Walford Davies, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, Eugene Goossens and Arthur Bliss studied under him. Born: 30 September 1852 in Dublin
Died: 29 March 1924, in London
Romantic / Post Romantic, Composer Stanford has often been dismissed in this century as a German imitator; an unoriginal fabricator of "Brahmsian" music. However, anything more than a cursory investigation of his music reveals his Celtic roots, as well as his intense individuality.
Stanford was born in Dublin, the only son of John Stanford, examinet in the court of chancery (Dublin) and clerk of the Crown, Co. Meath. Both parents were accomplished amateur musicians; the father sang bass, and the mother was a pianist. Their son trained under RM Levey (violin), Miss Meeke, Mrs Joseph Robinson, Miss Flynn and Michael Quarry (piano); and Sir Robert Stewart taught him composition and organ. His precocious ability was recorded in an article in the Musical Times for December 1898.
He came to London as a pupil of Arthur O'Leary and Ernst Pauer in 1862, and in 1870 won a scholarship to Queens' College, Cambridge, moving to Trinity College in 1873, and succeeded JL Hopkins as college organist, a post he held till 1892. His appointment as conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society gave him great opportunities, and the fame which the society soon obtained was in the main due to Stanford's energies.

C Faust Alto Rhapsody As a conductor he early made his mark, and in addition to countless Festival and other engagements in England and on the Continent, he held the post of conductor to the Bach Choir (1885-1902) and Leeds Philharmonic Society (1897-1910). He received the honorary degree of Mus. Doc. at Oxford in 1883, and at Cambridge in 1888. The honour of knighthood was conferred on him in 1901, and in 1904 he was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts at Berlin. Like most British composers, his larger compositions have rarely had the attention they deserve. Yet few will deny that his symphonies and other orchestral works are infinitely better, and far more attractive, than stacks of things that are played to rags year in, year out. And are not and The Critic still worthy of the attention of our opera companies? Among choralists his position is secure. No church choir is likely to exhaust the interest and effect of his service music and anthems. His Service in B flat, with its skilful and significant use of fragments of plain-chant, was something new in English church music, and wears as too little of the repertory does. Choral societies, large and small, will long revel in

Concerning tonight's composers, all were well grounded in the great traditions of the past, but were also innovators within those traditions. All were recognized by royalty, fellow musicians, and the general public during their lifetimes. In addition to validating mastery, the compositions on this program also demonstrate each composer's respect for and riches drawn from the heritage of English Church Music, whether Anglican, Roman Catholic, or Orthodox.
