03/04 Season Recording Ensemble Links ... Main Inaugural Newsletter
Vol. 1 No. 1 Feb 2004
Welcome

Welcome to the inaugural edition of the Continuum newsletter. This season has seen a big increase in activity, and as we hurry along at a lunatic pace immersed in the details of concert production, budgeting, grant writing and co-operative ventures, Jennifer and I sometimes feel that we shortchange our audience and long-time supporters. We would like you to know more about the development of upcoming projects, and share the ups and downs as we push ambitious plans through to completion. We are fortunate to work with some extremely dedicated, talented and just plain intriguing people, and we would like you meet them too. And so, although we really don¹t need anything extra to do, we want to pass along a sense of the energy and enthusiasm that propels all of us at here at Continuum. We hope it¹s contagious!
Our next concert: "Brassage":
In brass production "brassage" is the mixing of melted metals. For Continuum¹s concert, the title refers to the mixing of brass, celeste and harp timbres with Continuum¹s regular ensemble of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion and tape. The result is an extraordinary soundscape.
In keeping with Continuum¹s practice, three works on the programme are by Canadian composers: Serge Arcuri (Lueurs for French horn, percussion and tape), Gyula Csapo (Sonate, que veut tu? for 3 French horns, violin, harp and celeste) and Juliet Kiri Palmer (Foundry for the ensemble plus horn and trombone). This last is a Continuum commission with the support of the Laidlaw Foundation. Of her new work Palmer writes

History of June In Buffalo
Morton Feldman Click here to visit the University at Buffalo Music Library's June in Buffalo on-line exhibit. This excellent on-line exhibit, curated by composer and music librarian John Bewley, features vintage June in Buffalo photos, scores, manuscripts, and information about the founders, participants, and musicians involved in the early days of JIB. Participating senior composers have included luminaries such as Milton Babbitt, Steve Reich, Lukas Foss, Morton Feldman, Jacob Druckman, Roger Reynolds, Earle Brown, Harvey Sollberger, Lejaren Hiller, Donald Erb, Brian Ferneyhough, Stephen Mosko, Paul Lansky, Poul Ruders, Philippe Manoury, Gerhard Stabler, Diderik Wagenaar and many others. Enthusiastic critical interest in the Festival has been exemplified by active regional press coverage including radio broadcast and TV specials, articles in national publications such as the New Yorker and Perspectives of New Music and recent reviews in the New York Times and other leading international papers. Each year critics from the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung, Neue Zeitschrift fur Music, and Zurich and Rome dailies will cover the week's events. Through recording and broadcast coverage, it is expected that upwards of 200,000 individuals will hear recorded events of June in Buffalo. We are constantly developing new audiences in our marketing strategies and through new programs.

Musikken i lyder
Av Jørgen Mathiesen, Avisa Nordland
Man tar seg i å måpe. Smile. Undres.
Fantasifullt.
