His music often expresses political and social concerns. Stabler currently teaches music theory at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen and was the artistic director of World Music Days 1995 in Ruhrgebiet. He has presented lectures and concerts throughout Europe, Asia and North America and has taught at numerous American universities, including Stanford, Yale, Columbia and Wesleyan. He recently completed a two-month concert/lecture tour of the United States and Canada. Stabler (who is also an accordionist) wrote, "Why the accordion plays a prominent role in my oeuvres is most evident in my work fallen, fallen . . . und liegen und fallen for soprano, tuba, accordion and tape (1988/89), as the instrument is chosen because of its unique characteristics. The music is based on poems by Paul Celan and requires relating to the multi-layered content and the compositional concept a continuum of sound from technically produced electronic sounds on tape to the voice of a human being.

Over 3,000 years old, it consists of 17 bamboo pipes of different lengths joined by a bowl shaped wind chamber. The player holds the instrument in front of their face and plays by blowing into it while opening and closing holes. Metal tongues vibrate to create the sound. It has traditionally been used in Japanese court music along with flutes, zithers and lutes. The music accompanied religious festivals as well as official state affairs and banquets. The sound of the sho is not unlike the accordion, though it has a thinner delicate quality and lacks any bass resonance. The pitches can sound on both inhaling and exhaling and so can produce extended tones as can the accordion (reversing the breath similar in effect to reversing the bellows). The music on the album was written by contemporary composer Gerhard Stäbler and though inspired by trips to Japan is decidedly not traditional court music. My only previous exposure to Stäbler's music was on a CD of solo accordion music performed by Teodoro Anzellotti. I had a mixed reaction to that as I have to the music on this album.

New music, sometimes called experimental, is a catchall phrase for performances and compositions outside the mainstream. In the United States, its patron was John Cage, a visionary composer best known for developing chance music (pieces written, for example, by throwing I Ching sticks). Its heyday was the 1970s and early 1980s. Now, however, many of its compositional techniques and stars minimalists Philip Glass and Steve Reich, most notably have become part of the norm. Feisty rebelliousness is in regression. Stabler is luckier. Germany's government heavily subsidizes the arts. Indeed, he is sufficiently successful to have his music published by the German arm of Ricordi, the Italian firm best known for publishing the operas of Verdi and Puccini. Stabler's opening work, Rosenkrantz (Rosary) of 1995, illustrated the zany side of new music, rooted in the "happenings" of the 1960s. Lying on a bedlike box, he began as if he were waking up with a respiratory problem, gasping for air (in very well-formed tones).
