    PULITZER PRIZE-MUSIC
    April 18 , 2000
Now, we continue our conversations with this year's winners of the Pulitzer prizes in the arts, and once again to Elizabeth Farnsworth. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The winner in music this year is Lewis Spratlan for the concert version of act two of his opera, "Life is a Dream." The opera is based on Pedro Calderon de la Barca 17th century play, "La Vida Es Sueño," a masterpiece of Spanish literature. Lewis Spratlan's music has been widely performed in the United States and around the world. A CD of his work, "Night Music," was released in 1993. He is professor of music at Amherst College.
Thank you for being with us, and congratulations. LEWIS SPRATLAN, Pulitzer Prize, Music: Thank you very much. It's a pleasure to be here. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: You wrote this opera a long time ago in the mid 1970's, right? And it was only recently performed. What happened? LEWIS SPRATLAN: Yeah, it's a complex story. I'll try to make it brief. In 1975, I was asked by the New Haven Opera Theater to write an opera, and it was suggested as a basis for a libretto that I have a look at "La Vida es Sueño" of Calderon. I was caught up immediately, decided that was the way to go, and got to work, and was halfway through the composition of the third act and the company folded. And there I was with an opera and nobody to put it on. And I immediately got to work together with my publisher, attempting to get it performed, but was not successful. And the piece had been sitting on the shelf for 22 years.

  • Next message: Lawrence Schenbeck: "Re: Lewis Spratlan wins Pulitzer Prize" Today it was announced that Lewis Spratlan of Amherst won the Pulitzer
Prize for music for his concert version of Act II of his opera "Life is
a Dream" based on a 17th Century Spanish play by Pedro Calderon.
I looked for recordings by Professor Spratlan and found to my regret,
that only two are available. I've ordered one and look forward to
hearing it, although the prize-winning piece is evidently not yet
recorded. While I think it is great that the Pulitzer committee has
recognized someone who isn't "one of the usual suspects writing trendy
music" I find it frustratingly hard to stay current with new music.

What makes you think Spratlan isn't one of the usual suspects? The Pulitzer
usually goes to academics or academic-style composers, and he probably fits
the profile. (All the usual suspects we *know* are getting on in years:
Boulez and Berio are in their 70s, Feldman and many others are dead.)
Maybe this year's award is just one more indication that the work of
traditional, cultivated composition is becoming ever more remote from the
actual musical lives most of us lead. If a person really wants to keep up

Specialization : Technique and repertoire for voice, early music, German Lieder, contemporary music
Soprano Melinda Spratlan has an outstanding reputation for versatility in refined and captivating performances of various stylistic periods. She is inspired by a deep love of text and is drawn to music of all periods from the Renaissance to the present.
A dedicated teacher, Spratlan particularly enjoys teaching voice in the Mount Holyoke music department, because "the program is so committed to having individual and ensemble performance be an equal partner with the study of music history, theory, and composition." As a vocal coach, she enjoys "helping my students develop a voice technique that is free of excess tension and manipulation and that results in a healthful and free production of vocal sound. That moment when a student's voice suddenly encompasses that heretofore unreachable high note, subtly blends registers, or can support a longer phrase, never ceases to fill me with delight."
