The Marches of John Philip Sousa
The great John Philip Sousa was closely related to the University of Illinois Division of Bands, being a close friend of the first Director of Bands, A.A. Harding, and was quite proud of the Illinois Band of the early 1900s, calling it "The World's Greatest College Band". "Stars and Stripes Forever" is his most recognized masterpiece, as well as the official march of the United States, and as such is played by the Marching Illini as part of the closing sequence for most of the sit-down concerts that we are involved in. "University of Illinois" was written expressly for and dedicated to the University. It is not known if it was composed at Harding's request, or if Sousa simply wanted to express his admiration for the Illinois Band. Sousa completed it June 6, 1929 and it was premiered on June 17th in a Sousa Band broadcast. During the era of live band broadcasts over WILL radio, this march was used as signature music for the Illinois Band. "The Glory of the Yankee Navy" was composed to assist the struggling musical comedy "The Yankee Girl" starring Blanche Ring, to whom the march was dedicated. Prior to the opening of the show, the march was titled "The Honor of the Yankee Navy" for a time. It is a march that is typical of the type used by the Marching Illini during halftime performances and parades in the 1950s. Upon the death of Mr. Sousa, over 70% of his original manuscripts were bequeathed to the Division of Bands along with many of his personal instruments and effects. They are currently on display in the Sousa Library on the second floor of the Harding Band Building. Since then, Mr. Sousa has been declared a

MR. WATTENBERG: Hello, I’m Ben Wattenberg. You are listening to the most famous, and perhaps most frequently played piece of American music ever written, John Phillip Sousa’s The Stars and Stripes Forever. This week Think Tank takes a look at Sousa the man, the composer, and the promoter. Just who was The March King, and how is it that almost 150 years after his birth his music is still such a central part of the American experience. The topic before the house, John Phillip Sousa, the first American musical superstar, this week on Think Tank.
To most people the name John Phillip Sousa is synonymous with patriotism. For over 100 years orchestras and bands around the world have been playing his songs nonstop. He was the most famous band leader the world has ever known, and American’s first superstar. John Phillip Sousa was born on November 6th, 1854 in Washington, D.C., just a block and a half away from the Marine barracks. His parents, Elizabeth and Antonio were immigrants. His Portuguese father played trombone with the Marine band, and encourage young John to join him as an apprentice musician at the age of 13.
In 1880, at the age of 26, Sousa began a career as the leader of the Marine band. In his 12 years at the helm Sousa transformed this Marine outfit into the country’s premier military band, known as The President’s Own. Their concerts attracted large and appreciative audiences. The band’s reputation spread. In 1889 Sousa wrote what would become the most popular song in America and in Europe, the Washington Post March.

The widespread musical influence of John Philip Sousa through his compositions, transcriptions of music for band, and his literary efforts affected musical thought and practice worldwide. As director of the United States Marine Band from 1880-1892, Sousa developed "The President's Own" into an outstanding performing organization. After leaving the Marine Band in 1892 to direct his own professional touring band, Sousa was always aware that he was a musical ambassador for the United States and described himself as "Salesman of Americanism, globetrotter, and musician."
The University of Illinois Connection
Due to the presence of the Sousa Band performance collection, the University of Illinois is one of the few places that John Philip Sousa's music may be studied and understood as he actually intended it. The 3,400 titles of published and manuscript music are housed in the Harding Band Building in a suite of rooms especially designed to accommodate the collection. Over 120 holograph manuscript scores and music sketches penned by the "March King" may be found in the University of Illinois Sousa materials, as well as the band parts to his " Stars and Stripes Forever ," declared the National March of the United States by an Act of Congress in December 1987.
