The Fifth String
By John Philip Sousa I The coming of Diotti to America
had awakened more than usual
interest in the man and his work. His
marvelous success as violinist in the
leading capitals of Europe, together with
many brilliant contributions to the literature of his instrument, had long been favorably commented on by the critics of the old world. Many stories of his struggles and his triumphs had found their way across the ocean and had been read and re-read with interest. Therefore, when Mr. Henry Perkins, the well-known impresario, announced with an air of conscious pride and pardonable enthusiasm that he had secured Diotti for a ``limited'' number of concerts, Perkins' friends assured that wide-awake gentleman that his foresight amounted to positive genius, and they predicted an unparalleled success for his star. On account of his wonderful ability as player, Diotti was a favorite at half the courts of Europe, and

The widespread musical influence of John Philip Sousa through his compositions, transcriptions of music for band, and his literary efforts affected musical thought and practice worldwide. As director of the United States Marine Band from 1880-1892, Sousa developed "The President's Own" into an outstanding performing organization. After leaving the Marine Band in 1892 to direct his own professional touring band, Sousa was always aware that he was a musical ambassador for the United States and described himself as "Salesman of Americanism, globetrotter, and musician."
    The University of Illinois Connection
Due to the presence of the Sousa Band performance collection, the University of Illinois is one of the few places that John Philip Sousa's music may be studied and understood as he actually intended it. The 3,400 titles of published and manuscript music are housed in the Harding Band Building in a suite of rooms especially designed to accommodate the collection. Over 120 holograph manuscript scores and music sketches penned by the "March King" may be found in the University of Illinois Sousa materials, as well as the band parts to his " Stars and Stripes Forever ," declared the National March of the United States by an Act of Congress in December 1987.

The Original Sousaphone For many years there were claims and counter claims about who invented the Sousaphone. The conventional wisdom has held that the instrument was invented by the C.G. Conn company. Indeed, Conn instruments were in use by the Sousa band by 1898. In the course of researching the history of the Pepper company we have found reason to believe that the first bell upright, bass brass instrument was built by the J.W. Pepper Co. in 1893 and displayed at the industrial exhibt in Philadelphia of that same year. The instrument pictured below is that horn. In an interview with John Philip Sousa the Christian Science Monitor of May 30, 1922 quoted him as follows:
