Home Composers Roberto Sierra updated 27 June 2000 Roberto Sierra In recent years, Roberto Sierra's colorful and rhythmic music has attracted a growing audience both in North America and Europe. Acclaimed as one of Latin America's most active contemporary composers, Sierra came to prominence in 1987 when his first major orchestral composition, premiered at Carnegie Hall with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Since then, his works have been performed by the orchestras of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, San Antonio, and Phoenix, by the American Composers Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, Continuum, England's BBC Symphony, and at Wolf Trap, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Festival Casals, France's Festival de Lille, the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and Germany's Neue Musik Bonn. Karel Husa Sierra's recent orchestral works can be heard on the 1994 Koss Classics CD featuring the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Zdenek Macal. His music has also been recorded by New World Records, Newport Classics, New Albion, ADDA, VRAS Productions, and the Musical Heritage Society. Recent commissions include Concierto Caribe

Roberto Sierra Roberto Sierra was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, in 1953. He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in 1976, and traveled to Europe where he continued his studies in London at the Royal College of Music and at the University of London; at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht, Holland; and with Gyorgy Ligeti at the Hamburg Hochschule fur Musik. In 1983 he became assistant and in 1985 director of the Cultural Activities Department at the University of Puerto Rico, then dean of studies and chancellor at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music; in 1989 he became composer-in-residence of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Sierra's works include the chamber opera "El Mensajero de Plata", the ballet "El Contemplado", the orchestra piece "Jubilo", numerous chamber works, and solo pieces for piano and harpsichord. He has also written a work titled "entre terceras" for two synthesizers and computer. His works have been performed by the major orchestras of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Houston, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Dallas, Detroit, San Antonio and Phoenix, as well as by the American Composers Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, Continuum, the Bronx Arts Ensemble, Voices of Change, England's BBC Symphony, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and at Wolf Trap, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Festival Casals, Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany, France's Festival de Lille and others. Donate Print Sierra, Roberto - Classical Photo courtesy of Roberto Sierra Pianist, arranger and composer, Roberto Sierra, was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. He demonstarted a great interest in music at an early age; teaching himself to play his sister's piano. Sierra completed his advanced studies in composition at the Hochschule für Musik in Hamburg in 1982, with the internationally famous composer Gyorgy Ligeti. During this time, Sierra was also hard at work composing; making a name for himself internationally with compositions such as "Salsa para los vientos" which gained him first prize at the Budapest Spring Festival in 1983, and "Suite" which won first prize in the Alienor Harpsichord Competition. Later, in 1987, the very same Alienor Harpsichord Competition dedicated a concert to Sierra's chamber music compositions, which was recorded and broadcast by the BBC. Sierra's works have been performed by many other orchestras, including those in Philadelphia, Pittsburg, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, New York, and the National Symphony Orchestra, in the United States. In other countries, his works have been performed by the Kronos Quartet, Continuum, and the BBC Orchestra. His works have also been featured at numerous music festivals including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the
