I can think of few composers so closely identified with their natural environment as is Sibelius with Finland. True, Mussorgsky seems to enshrine the very soul of Russia, just as Delius evokes the world of the English garden, but no other composer brings to life so vividly the wildness and grandeur of the North as does Jean Sibelius. Of course the Finland into which he was born, was an outlying province of Tsarist Russia, and far removed from the sophisticated and prosperous nation it has since become. During his long life Sibelius became a national figure in almost the same way as was Churchill in Britain. For most people he

THE BANTOCK SOCIETY was founded in 1946 under the presidency of Jean Sibelius. A Trust Fund was initially established to promote interest in the life and work of Bantock and amongst the original signatories were Bax, Boult, Boughton, Brian, Dyson, Goosens and Vaughan Williams. Beecham's famous recording of Fifine at the Fair was partly funded by the Society. Since then, the Society has endured, if somewhat intermittently, in the service of Bantock's music. October 1996 marked the 50th anniversary of GB's death and with the recent flourish of excellent recordings and the current revival of interest in the composer's music the Society continues with renewed vigour. The Society now publishes The Bantock Society Journal twice a year in the winter and summer, with two supplementary newsletters in the spring and autumn. The Journal contains articles on Bantock's life and music as well as Society news, details of concerts, letters, books and CD reviews, and acts as a forum of discussion to which members are invited to contribute. You may read an illustrative article: Granville Bantock: The Hebridean Connection by Vincent Budd . The Newsletter keeps members up to date and in touch with all aspects of Bantock-related events. The society also organises meetings, lectures and recitals of Bantock's music. All members will receive the

http://www.flash.net/~park29/sibelius_apprec.htm
Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) A Celebration Say the name "Sibelius," and the answer you'll most likely get is "Finlandia," the name of the Finnish composer's rousing anthem of nationalistic reawakening. And yet, this is the only composition that will spring to mind for even most lovers of classical music. Long before Frank Sinatra crooned those famous lyrics, the iconoclastic Finnish composer Jean Sibelius spoke of "my way" when describing his musical output. Of the great composers of symphonic music, it is easy to peg their musical styles: Beethoven is classical; Bach is Baroque; Rachmaninoff is Romantic; Debussy is an impressionist, and so on. But to which "school" does Jean Sibelius belong? Romantic? Neo-Romantic? Nationalist? Impressionist? Sibelius was all of these, yet truly he was none of them. One listens to the striking originality of the master's themes and his innovative use of tonal colour, and one hears only "Sibelius." It was not always thus: Having studied in Berlin, he was early on enamoured with the operas of Richard Wagner. Often, he would sit, captivated by the sheer sense of power and drama of Wagner's operas. An early project of Sibelius' (which didn't come to final fruition) written under Wagner's influence was the grand opera The Building of the Boat.

Ainola - the home of Jean Sibelius
Written for Virtual Finland by professor Irmeli Niemi,
Chairman of the Board the Ainola Foundation The place where Finland's greatest composer Jean Sibelius spent much of his life, the house named Ainola, after his wife Aino, is a destination of pilgrimage for music lovers in general and admirers of Sibelius in particular. The visitor to Ainola absorbs the unbroken tranquillity and gains a sense of the world in which the composer and his family lived. When he was composing there Sibelius insisted on silence; he believed that music should be heard without disturbance from extraneous noise. By the early 1900s, when Sibelius was in his thirties, he began to realise that Helsinki was not the right place for him to write music: too much of fashionable society, too much alluring but time-consuming trivia. In his own words, "In Helsinki every song within me dies." Many another artist had rekindled the flame of creativity once away from the distractions of the city.
