An Introduction Shostakovich: Stalinist or Soviet Dissident? Works Cited July-31-2003
Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk The San Francisco Opera 's 2003-2004 season includes Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk . This production from Staatsoper Stuttgart will have 6 performances in November of 2003. This website was started in 1996 as a collection of papers I wrote for various college courses. The essays above have not been edited by anyone else and I haven't corrected the factual inaccuracies noticed upon second reading this year. I highly recommend other resources listed below. DSCH Journal : "Dedicated to the life and work of Dmitry Dmitryevich Shostakovich" I subscribe to this excellent publication. Music Under Soviet Rule : An excellent Russian music site with content from Ian MacDonald and Dr. Allan B. Ho. alt.fan.shostakovich : a newsgroup where in depth discussions of the music of Shostakovich and other Russian musicians are held. Speaking of Shostakovich : "An archive of media articles" collected and presented by C. H. Loh.

Music History 102:
Twentieth Century Russian Composers
Sergei Rachmaninoff
Born: Oneg, district of Novgorod, April 1, 1873 Died: Beverly Hills, Cal., March 28, 1943 Having studied at the St. Petersburg and Moscow Conservatories, Rachmaninoff produced, at the age of twenty, one of the most popular and enduring piano pieces in the whole literature, the Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3 no. 2 . Most of Rachmaninoff's best-known compositions were written before 1917, the year he left Russia to settle first in Switzerland, and later in the United States. His career focused mainly on his concertizing as a virtuoso pianist, although he was acknowledged as a fine conductor. Among his best works are his four piano concertos , including the well-known Piano Concerto no. 2 in C minor , which illustrates Rachmaninoff's penchant for "the big tune," much in the manner of Tchaikovsky , whom he greatly admired.
Serge Prokofiev
Born: Sontsovka, April 27, 1891

Shostakovich, Dmitry
Stage Works Katerina Ismailova remains the principal opera of Shostakovich, with the early opera The Nose, based on Gogol, and the ballet The Golden Age. Incidental music for the theatre includes scores for Shakespeare's Hamlet and for King Lear, the same two plays being among the films for which he wrote scores. Orchestral Music Symphonies The fifteen symphonies of Shostakovich range in scope from the First Symphony of 1925, a graduation composition, to the embittered Thirteenth using Yevtushenko's poems. The Fourteenth, which contains settings of various poems came two years before the Fifteenth and last symphony of 1971. The Fifth Symphony, the immediate post-war Ninth and the Tenth of 1953 are most often heard, while Nos. 2 and 3, with Nos. 11 and 12, have more overtly patriotic suggestions about them.
