Shostakovich Myths Debunked
Details the exposure of Volkov's " Testimony " fraud and other lies, errors, fantasies, twisted scholarship and wishful thinking in the West's cold war version (still egregious in far too many CD liner notes, and despite pounds of onanistic "reconsidering") of Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Contents Volkov's "Testimony " Brief Review of Wilson's "Shostakovich- A Life Remembered" (including other books of interest.) Re: alt.fan.shostakovich Shostakovich Reality Check Shostakovich and Soviet society - "It remains hugely ironic that, of all things, Soviet music should attain a cult popularity among certain right-wingers of today based on the wholly imaginary anti- Sovietism of Soviet composers. What is doubly ironic is that, thanks to the school of Socialist Realism, Soviet music is the only 20th century music they (think they) can understand." Bibliography Links

Researchers First and foremost the 'DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH' CONTEMPORARY MUSIC INFORMATION CENTRE is dedicated to the life and music of the most poignant composer of our century, Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich. Open to researchers, musicians, students or fans worlwide, the Centre, based in the very modern Leonardo da Vinci University In an attempt to add a geographical as well as artistic context to Dmitri Shostakovich's vast musical heritage, the Centre takes in important documentation on other Russian musicians - interpreters and composers - from the earlier part of the 20th century as well as on young musicians from Russia today and from the former Soviet republics. The Centre is the Western counterpart of the Moscow-based "Shostakovich Apartment-Museum", based in the composer's last-known work-place. It also acts as a focal point for the various Societies and Associations based in England, France, Japan, Germany and the USA, by means of the Internet and, more comprehensively, the twice-yearly DSCH Journal . Covering 50 countries, the first publications appeared in 1987 and have included articles by musicians, musicologists, and general writers on all subjects concerning Shostakovich's life and work.

Dmitri Shostakovich By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 25 September, 1906, St Petersburg, Russia Died 9 August, 1975, Moscow, Russia Dmitri Shostakovich is inevitably the first composer mentioned in any discussion of Soviet music. As the leading member of the Soviet Union's first generation of composers, his struggles with the ruling regime over the course of his career where both legendary and controversial. Biography A native of St Petersburg, Shostakovich was both a gifted pianist and composer. With the immense international success of this First Symphony, he chose a career as a composer. The relatively free atmosphere of the Soviet Union during the '20s allowed Shostakovich to compose more avant-garde and experimental pieces, many of which had revolutionary and political themes. Works such as his opera The Nose and his Second Symphony typify the style of this early period.

Shostakovich, Dmitri [dyim E E Pronunciation Key Shostakovich, Dmitri The Nose (Leningrad; from a tale by Gogol ), and a ballet, The Golden Age. Shostakovich sought Soviet approval and survived the changing tides of opinion. Severely castigated after Stalin saw a 1936 production of his popular opera Lady Macbeth of the Mzensk District (1934), he was restored to favor with his powerful yet ironic Fifth Symphony (1937). From then on he concentrated on symphonic compositions (in all, he wrote 15 symphonies) and, during the World War II, on heroic cantatas.
