Alexander Scriabin
Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin (sometimes transliterated as Skryabin January 6 April 27 ) was a Russian composer and pianist Scriabin was born in Moscow . He studied the piano from an early age, taking lessons with Nikolay Zverev who was teaching Sergei Rachmaninov at the same time. He became a noted pianist. Scriabin also became interested in theosophy Many of Scriabin's works are written for the piano , the earliest pieces resemble Frederic Chopin and include music in many forms that Chopin himself employed, such as the etude , the prelude and the mazurka . Scriabin's ten piano sonatas, however, are more original, employing very unusual harmonies and textures. The last five of these are written with no key signature and many passages in them can be said to be atonal . See: mystic chord Scriabin wrote only a small number of orchestral works, including a piano concerto The Poem of Ecstasy (1908) and Prometheus: The Poem of Fire (1910), which includes a part for a "clavier à lumières" - an implement played like a piano, but which flooded the concert hall with coloured light rather than sound. Few performances of the piece, including the premiere, have includes this light element, although a performance in

Scriabin, Alexander (1872 - 1915)
A friend and fellow-student of Rachmaninov in Moscow, the Russian composer Alexander Scriabin enjoyed a very different and much shorter career, at first as a concert pianist, with the encouragement of Belyayev, who published his earlier compositions. His interest in philosophy and the theosophical theories of Madame Blavatsky influenced the later form of his composition, particularly the larger scale orchestral works, while his later piano music explores new musical territory. His life was vitiated by a growing self-absorption, coupled with eccentricity of beliefs. Orchestral Music Scriabin enjoyed early success with his 1896 Piano Concerto. Of greater significance, however, are the later works, Symphony No. 3 "Le divin poème", Le poème de l'éxtase and Prométhée, Le poème du feu. Recommended Recordings

Piano Music Scriabin's earliest piano music was written while he was a student at the Moscow Conservatory, leading to a final series of five sonatas starting in 1911. The remaining seven sonatas cover the years from 1886 until 1907. Other shorter piano pieces include studies, preludes and impromptus, in a style that develops from the influence of Chopin to a sensuous idiom entirely his own.

NEW MILLENNIUM GUITAR PUBLISHING CO.
Alexander Scriabin
, born January 6,1872- died April 27,1915, was a enigmatic figure sometimes considered the first of the modern composers. Well known authority George Perle said of Scriabin "he was the first to exploit serial procedures systematically as a means of compensating for the loss of traditional tonal functions."
Scriabin was said to have declared to a friend,"It would be terrible to remain nothing more than a composer of sonatas and symphonies." Consequently he planned a major multimedia piece "The Mysterium" that was to incorporate expanded orchestra, chorus, dancers, color keyboard, olfactory keyboard, poetry, utterances and bells suspended from zeppelins. All of this was to be held in a specially built amphitheater in India. It was, he believed, a purification ritual through art for humankind.
Scriabin's Prelude no.6,op.11 is here wonderfully transcribed by Kevin Germain. This work is from Scriabin's first period and it is very Chopinesque. Please notify New Millennium if you have performed it in a program to the public or have recorded it.

http://www.scriabinsociety.com/biography.html
Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin , the noted Russian composer, was born on Christmas Day and died at Eastertide according to Western-style calendrical reckoning, 7 January 1872 - 14 April, 1915. No one was more famous during his lifetime, and few were more quickly ignored after his death. Although he was never absent from the mainstream of Russian music, the outside world neglected him until recently. Today, there is worldwide resurgence of interest in his music and ideas.
Scriabin wrote five symphonies, including the Divine Poem (1903), the Poem of Ecstasy (1907), and the Poem of Fire or Prometheus (1909). His ten piano sonatas are staples of many pianists' repertoire, with the Fifth being perhaps the most popular, while the Seventh (White Mass) and Ninth (Black Mass) follow close. Vladimir Horowitz in his late sixties began playing the Tenth, and it remains today in vogue among more daring virtuosi.
, are greatly admired. Scriabin's style changed enormously as he progressed. The early pieces are romantic, fresh and easily accessible, while his later compositions explore harmony's further reaches. It is thought by scholars, that had Scriabin lived beyond his brief 43 years, he would have preceded the Austrian school of duodecaphony, and Moscow would have become the center of atonality.
Immediately upon Scriabin's sudden death, Sergei Rachmaninoff toured Russia in a series of all-Scriabin recitals. It was the first time he played music other than his own in public. In those days Scriabin was known as a pianist and Rachmaninoff was considered only as a composer. Scriabin, thus, was posthumously responsible for his friend and classmate's later pianistic career in Europe and America.

Alexander Scriabin was born in Moscow. As early 1892, and before completing his piano and composition studies at the Moscow conservatory, he had embarked upon a career as piano virtuoso, which he would pursue practically until his death in 1915. To confine Scriabin's Works and musical personality to existing models proves virtually impossible for several reasons. In a short space of time - 30 years at the most - he had written around a hundred works, of which 74 gave a pre - eminent role to the piano solo. MIDI FILE - Prelude op.2 No. 2 for piano MIDI FILE - Prelude op.11 No. 14 for piano MIDI FILE - Prelude op.13 No. 2 for piano
Evolution of style through this prolific output was absolutely staggering. The early works still show the influence of Chopin and Liszt , but upon contact with Wagner his musical language enriched itself to such an extent that there resulted a dissolution of tonality. Although he remained loyal to the piano from 1890 Scriabin turned towards the orchestra. With his Symphonic works "the Divine Poem" of 1903, the Poem of Ecstasy of 1907, Prometheus or the Poem of Fire of 1910, Scriabin started the building a system of ideas both philosophical and mystical in nature, but which jeopardized his music reaching the general public for a number of years.
