Juni 1810 in Zwickau, Sachsen geboren und starb am 29. Juli 1856 in Endenich bei Bonn. Schumann studierte in Leipzig und Heidelberg Rechtswissenschaften und später Musik. Er erhielt Unterricht von Fr. Wieck (seinem späteren Schwiegervater) und H. Dorn, mußte jedoch infolge Übertreibens seiner klaviertechnischen Studien die geplante Laufbahn als Pianist aufgeben. Er begründete 1834 mit Wieck, L. Schunke und J. Knorr die 'Neue Zeitschrift für Musik', in der er für die musikalische Jugend eintrat. 1843 war er Lehrer an Mendelssohns neugegründeten Konservatorium in Leipzig. Von 1844 bis 1850 war er in Dresden, dort u.a. Begründer und Leiter der 'Schumannschen Singakademie'. 1850 wurde er städtischer Musikdirektor in Düsseldorf, mußte jedoch 1853 wegen eines Nervenleidens abdanken. Schumann stürzte sich 1854 in den Rhein und wurde daraufhin in eine Nervenklinik bei Bonn gebracht, wo er zwei Jahre später verstarb. Home Page Robert Schumann Life The son of a bookseller, publisher and writer, Robert Schumann showed early abilities in both music and literature, the second facility used in his later writing on musical subjects. After brief study at university, he was allowed by his widowed mother and guardian to undertake serious study of the piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose favourite daughter Clara Wieck was later to become Schumann's wife. MIDI FILE - Träumerei, for piano His ambitions as a pianist were thwarted by a weakness in the fingers of one hand, but the 1830s nevertheless brought a number of compositions for the instrument. The year of his marriage, 1840, was a year of song, followed by attempts in which his young wife encouraged him at more ambitious forms of orchestral composition. Settling first in Leipzig and then in Dresden, the Schumanns moved in 1850 to Duesseldorf, where Schumann had his first official appointment, as municipal director of music. In 1854 he had a serious mental break-down, followed by two years in the asylum at Endenich before his death in 1856.

Schumann, Robert Alexander composer germany 8 Jun 1810, Zwickau - 29 Jul 1856, Endenich (near Bonn) Grave location: Bonn: Alter Friedhof Studied Law at Leipzig, but around 1830 he focused his attention to music. Due to a paralysed right hand he wasn't able to play the piano well enough and he turned to composition. After a long struggle for her hand he married Clara Wieck in 1840 and in 1843 they went to live in Dresden. In 1850 the Schumanns and their children moved to Düsseldorf, where his "Rheinische Sinfonie" was first performed on Februari 6, 1851. Schumann suffered from health problems and he conducted his last concert in Düsseldorf on October 27, 1853. In January 1854 he and Clara gave concerts in Hanover, but on February 2 he jumped from a bridge into the river Rhein. He was saved by fisherman, but his mental illness (probably caused by syphilis) was so severe that he had to spend the rest of his life in a mental institution at Endenich, near Bonn. He was buried at the Alter Friedhof in Bonn, a place he visited several times during his life to take a look at the tomb of Schiller's wife Charlotte. Family Wife: Schumann, Clara Josephine
