    23. The Poet Speaks - Life Of Robert Schumann
Short narrative, illustrated with line drawings.
    http://www.roangelo.net/schumann/
    "The Poet Speaks"
    Life of Robert Schumann
Robert Schumann was born in 1810 in Zwickau, Saxony. It was in the large house Schumann read the classics - and the moderns: Schiller, Goethe, Jean Paul Richter; and he played Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
Schumann thought the girl played "amazingly well"; but that Clara's nose was to long, and her eyes - too large for her face.
But law school would begin - though Schumann soon wrote home that "its ice-cold definitions would crush the life out of" him. So he spent rather more time dreaming at the keyboard. A close friend and fellow disciple of Jean Paul's was a law student at Heidelberg; Schumann would go there.
To try to speak of Mendelssohn Schumann wrote, would be "to try and analyze grace or weight moonlight". Of Chopin, Schumann said simply, "Hats off, gentlemen - a genius!"
Schumann's mother was overjoyed by the news.
that at any moment they might meet in a third place and yet out of consideration for each other would be obliged - or thought they would be obliged - to behave like strangers - [all this]
But Schumann found that circumstances in the Austrian capital would not allow him to establish himself there musically.

    25. Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
A biography of robert schumann, listing his compositions and giving detail of his career as a composer, pianist, and critic with insights into his personality.
    http://www.carolinaclassical.com/schumann/
    by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
As a German composer, critic, and music journalist, Robert Schumann was one of the driving forces of the young Romantic movement in Germany. And like many in his generation, Schumann did not seem destined to become a composer, let alone one who would be so influential in the development of a new style. But music became all-important to Schumann, and he displayed multiple talents as a performer, composer, and literary exponent of Romanticism, championing new composers and their works and influencing the musical tastes of a generation.
Following the death of his father in 1826, Schumann decided to choose music rather than poetry as his life's work. However, his mother wanted him to learn a more lucrative trade than music could provide her son. Despite that from his childhood, Schumann had demonstrated an exceptional ability as a pianist, he persisted in strong literary interests as well. He was very enthusiastic over the writings of Jean Paul (J.P.F. Richter). But in 1821, at his mother's insistence, he went to Leipzig to study law, but instead, Schumann spent his time in musical, social, and literary activities. He composed some piano music and took piano lessons from Friedrich Wieck. After a stay in Heidelberg, ostensibly studying law but actually music, Schumann persuaded his mother, that he should give up law in favor of a pianist's career. In 1829, he wrote to his mother:
I have arrived at the conviction that with work, patience, and a good teacher, I would be able, within six years, to surpass any pianist. Besides... I have an imagination and perhaps a skill for the individual work of creation.

All presided over by Beethoven whose "Heiligenstadt Testament" is evoked by the title (literally: "Saints' Asylum": a reference to Robert Schumann's years of insanity). Mayrocker has worked from biographical material, but has above all, "looked into the eye of the hurricane."
Friederike Mayrocker is one of the most original (and prominent) Austrian writers today, famous for the baroque, "hallucinatory" quality of her poetry and prose. She was born in 1924 in Vienna, where she continues to live. In the 1960s she was associated with the experimental "Vienna Group." She has received many prestigious literary prizes in both Austria and Germany, and, in 1997, the International Prize of The America Awards.
"The prose dances like fingerwork on keys.... Each of the four writings sprung from composers' lives finds its own form of telling yet all share an elegiac tone concerned with 'the last time' and the time before that."

    Background:
For more detailed biographies of each of these classical composers, refer to:
    Johannes Brahms
, and Robert Schumann , by Betty Fry.

    Assignment Choices:
    - What might Brahms say to Clara to first open up the subject of his love for her?
    - Does Brahms propose marriage or is it he who never asks, rather than she who refuses?
    2. Write the lyrics for a song Brahms might have written for Clara. Keep in mind that words for songs during this time period usually rhymed. 3. If you play an instrument, create an original short piece that Brahms might have written for Clara. Consider the emotions of love and how they might be conveyed through the music. Would the tempo be slow and the tone sad because love is unrequited, or might the tempo be fast and furious to show the frustration of two souls that never connect?
