Background:
For more detailed biographies of each of these classical composers, refer to:
Johannes Brahms
, and Robert Schumann , by Betty Fry.

Assignment Choices:
- What might Brahms say to Clara to first open up the subject of his love for her?
- Does Brahms propose marriage or is it he who never asks, rather than she who refuses?
2. Write the lyrics for a song Brahms might have written for Clara. Keep in mind that words for songs during this time period usually rhymed. 3. If you play an instrument, create an original short piece that Brahms might have written for Clara. Consider the emotions of love and how they might be conveyed through the music. Would the tempo be slow and the tone sad because love is unrequited, or might the tempo be fast and furious to show the frustration of two souls that never connect?

A Clara Schumann Commemoration
by Nancy B. Reich
as published in the October 1996 issue of the IAWM Journal , pp. 3-5.
To commemorate the centennial of the death of Clara Schumann on May 20, 1896, festivals, concerts, symposia, and press discussions of this remarkable musician and woman were held in Austria, Australia, Great Britain, and Germany. There were undoubtedly other events held as well, but I will report only on those held between April 20 and June 9 which I attended or about which I was informed. I have listed the performances of works primarily by Clara and Robert Schumann, although some of the concerts included works by their contemporaries.
April 22-24, 1996, Vienna: International Clara Schumann Symposium
Dr. Ostleitner persuaded a number of Viennese firms to cooperate with and sponsor the symposium. Among others, Gerstner Konditorei not only provided the participants with Viennese refreshments throughout the three days, but created a 1996 version of the Clara Wieck-Torte that had delighted the Viennese on the young pianist's 1837-38 visit.

Amazon Products Schumann (Master Musicians Series) Robert Schumann's evergreen ‘ Piano Concerto in A minor' is a perfect introduction to the work of this famous and very prolific composer. The ‘ Opus 54, Third Movement ' of this joyous Romantic concerto is playing for me now as I write. It started off in what I can only describe as a blaze of color with a solo piano taking center stage. A running theme, still on the piano, but with a softer orchestral accompaniment, soon leads to the famous march like tune, first given quietly on the strings, and then again taken up by the piano. The sense of celebration throughout the music is infectious. And if you like piano music, then you will like this piece. Schumann wrote it for his talented wife Clara, who became an influential teacher as well as a notable composer, and went on to become the most important woman pianist of the 19 th century. Born on 8 th June, 1810, Robert Schumann, was the youngest son of August Schumann, an author and translator of Romantic literature, and a ‘notable citizen and bookseller' of the town of Zwickau in Saxony. Successful as he was though, August Schumann suffered from attacks of severe nervous anxiety. Robert's mother, who gave him his first music lessons, lived in an exaggerated state of romance, and was subject to sudden violent passions and sentimentalism.

Schumann, Clara Josephine
pianist, composer germany 13 Sep 1819, Leipzig - 20 May 1896, Frankfurt am Main
Real name: Wieck, Clara Josephine
Grave location: Bonn: Alter Friedhof
Daughter of piano teacher Friedrich Wieck, who started giving her lessons when she was only five years old. She impressed her surroundings by playing difficult piano pieces by head when she was sixteen. In 1828 she made her public debute at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. In the same year Robert Schumann started piano lessons with Friedrich Wieck.
Clara and her father went on concert tours to Hamburg, Paris and other cities. Clara and Schumann started to spend more time together and Wieck tried to keep them apart by taking her to Dresden. They entered into a secret engagement on August 14, 1837 and on September 13, 1837 Schumann asked for her hand. Wieck refused boldly and Clara left for Vienna where Emperor Francis I called her 'Wundermädchen' (miracle girl).
In 1839 Clara asked for legal permission to marry Schumann and on September 12, 1840 they were finally married. They travelled to Russia in 1844 and to Vienna in 1846 for concerts. In 1849 they had to flee dresden for the revolution, Clara being pregnant of one of their eight children. In 1850 the Schumanns moved to Düsseldorf.
By 1854 Schumann suffered from a mental illness and he died in 1856. Clara moved to Berlin in 1857 and to Baden Baden in 1863. In 1864 she toured Russia once more and in 1873 she moved back to Berlin. From 1878 on she lived at Frankfurt am Main, where she gave her last concert on March 12, 1891.

All presided over by Beethoven whose "Heiligenstadt Testament" is evoked by the title (literally: "Saints' Asylum": a reference to Robert Schumann's years of insanity). Mayrocker has worked from biographical material, but has above all, "looked into the eye of the hurricane."
Friederike Mayrocker is one of the most original (and prominent) Austrian writers today, famous for the baroque, "hallucinatory" quality of her poetry and prose. She was born in 1924 in Vienna, where she continues to live. In the 1960s she was associated with the experimental "Vienna Group." She has received many prestigious literary prizes in both Austria and Germany, and, in 1997, the International Prize of The America Awards.
"The prose dances like fingerwork on keys.... Each of the four writings sprung from composers' lives finds its own form of telling yet all share an elegiac tone concerned with 'the last time' and the time before that."

Clara was born in Leipzig in 1819; she died in Frankfurt in 1896. Clara's parents were Friedrich Wieck (1785-1873), a music teacher, and Marianne Tromlitz Wieck Bargiel (1797-1872), a soprano and student of Wieck; Clara's father had resolved before her birth that she would be a great musician and child prodigy. Her first public appearance was in 1828 (age 9); first complete piano recital in 1830 (age 11); first extended tour in 1831. She performed extensively and studied piano, voice, violin, instrumentation, score reading, counterpoint, composition; wrote and published several pieces for solo piano. Robert Schumann came to live and study with Wieck in 1830, and asked permission to marry Clara in 1837; Wieck objected, and did all he could to prevent the wedding before Clara's 21st birthday when she would be legally able without his consent. Robert and Clara filed a lawsuit, and won, but out of spite went ahead and married the day before her birthday, September 12, 1840. They first lived in Leipzig where they both taught in the Conservatory there; they moved to Dresden in 1844, to Duesseldorf in 1850.

An article written by Dr Jill Halstead in the programme notes for a concert of music by Clara Schumann and Fanny Hensel at the Royal Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool in March 1998. From child prodigy to virtuoso pianist and composer, teacher, wife, mother, friend and inspiration to many of her contemporaries, Clara Schumann in the course of her life played many roles. As a girl born in an age when musical talent was considered only an asset in the marriage market, she went on to become one of the greatest performers of the century, competing alongside the likes of Liszt, Thalberg, Chopin and Rubenstein. Her long and illustrious career spanned over sixty years. Her influence on a whole generation, of composers and performers, not least Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, cannot be underestimated. The Silent Child The most important influence on Clara Schumann's early years was, without doubt, her father, Friedrich Wieck (1785-1873). He was a highly intelligent and ambitious man who first studied for the ministry. He came to music later in life, eventually becoming a piano teacher. By 1815, Wieck owned a business in Leipzig selling pianos and was renowned as a prestigious teacher of music. In 1816 Wieck married one of his most accomplished pupils, Marianne Tromlitz (1797-1872). In their seven years of marriage, Marianne gave birth to five children. Adelheid, born 1817 (who survived only a few months), followed by Clara (1819), Alwin (1821), Gustav (1823), and Victor (1824). Between concert engagements and household tasks, under the continued tutelage of Wieck, Marianne became a teacher and keyboard performer in her own right. The routine of numerous pregnancies coupled with teaching, practicing and performing, is a pattern of life Clara seems to have absorbed and later repeated.
