Gunther Schuller
Gunther Schuller has developed a musical career that ranges from composing and conducting to his extensive work as an educator, administrator, music publisher, record producer, and author. At the age of seventeen, Mr. Schuller was principal French hornist with the Cincinnati Symphony; two years later he was appointed to a similar position with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 1959 he gave up performing to devote himself primarily to composition. He has fulfilled commissions from major orchestras throughout the world and, since 1980, has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Among other awards, he has received two Guggenheim fellowships and numerous honorary degrees. In June 1991 he was recognized by the MacArthur Foundation and received one of the coveted MacArthur "Genius" Awards. In 1993, Down Beat Magazine honored Mr. Schuller with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to jazz. A composition written for the Louisville Symphony, Of Reminiscences and Reflections , won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize in Music.

As far as I know it, this is the most comprehensive book on swing music available. Gunther Schuller is interested in music, not life histories, so biographical information on musicians is scarce. The music, on the other hand, is described and analyzed thoroughly, with great originality and enthousiasm, including information on cross-links, influences, analyses of arrangements, song structures and solos.I don't believe anyone will read this book from the beginning to the end: each chapter is a...

Of Reminiscences and Reflections (1994) - Pulitzer Prize
Other Information: This biography is courtesy of GM Recordings. Thanks to Scott Menhinick. Born in 1925 on the Day of St. Cecilia, the Patron Saint of music, Gunther Schuller is now one of the elder statesmen of both post-war jazz musicians and 20th Century American composers. An inaugural member of the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and winner of the DownBeat Lifetime Achievement Award, his careers as composer, conductor, educator, historian, and music advocate have each changed the face of contemporary music. Schuller's musical odyssey began in 1942 with Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony when he was chosen as an extra French horn player for the maestro's American premiere of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7. After six months with the American Ballet Theater Orchestra in 1943 , under Antal Dorati, Schuller was named principal French horn of the Cincinnati Symphony. It was in Cincinnati that Schuller would first meet Duke Ellington and recognize the compositional potential of jazz. His work as an educator, at institutions like the Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, and the landmark Lenox School of Jazz, culminated in ten years as President of Boston's New England Conservatory (1967-77). He used this position, and his nearly twenty-five year stint at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, to legitimize jazz as a serious music and generate interest in ragtime, classic jazz, and contemporary classical music.

The Past Is in the Present
Duration: 25'

World Premiere: 25 March 1994
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
Jesus Lopez-Cobos, conductor
Commissioned by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for their centennial season
Note:
The Past Is In The Present , for orchestra, is in four movements and dedicated to the composer's late wife, Marjorie Black. In Schuller's words, "Part requiem, part jubilatio, the composition expresses a generally tranquil, reflective mood, a mixture of happy Cincinnati memories and feelings of profound loss." Critical Acclaim: A stunning world premiere by Gunther Schuller....the work dispels any thoughts that modern music is unemotional. Besides being well-crafted, it is deeply personal and tender.
