Franz Schubert
Composer, b. at Vienna, 31 January, 1797; d. there 19 November, 1829. He studied under his father, and subsequently under Holzer and Salieri, and in 1807, was first boy soprano in the Lichtenthal choir. In October, 1808, he entered the Imperial Choristers School, and soon gave evidence of extraordinary musical genius as a composer, his first effort being a pianoforte duet, early in 1810. During 1811 and 1812 he produced many instrumental pieces, also a "Salve Regina" and a "Kyrie". He left the Choir School in November, 1812, and took up work as a schoolmaster in order to avoid conscription. His "First Mass in F" was finished on 22 July, 1814, and performed by the Lichtenthal choir under the direction of Holzer. Competent critics have pronounced this mass as perhaps the most wonderful first work by any composer save the case of Beethoven's "Mass in C". Schubert conducted the second performance at the Augustinian church on 26 October, his brother, Ferdinand, presiding at the organ. During the same year he produced a symphony and a "Salve Regina";, as well as some songs and instrumental pieces. His famous "Erl King", dates from November, 1815, as does his "Mass in G" wonderful for a boy of eighteen. His compositions for 1816 include a "Salve Regina", a "Stabat Mater", a "Tantum Ergo", and a "Magnificat", as also two symphonies, and some delightful songs including the "Wanderer". He conducted the music at high Mass at the Alterehenfelder church on

Franz Schubert
It was in Vienna itself that Franz Schubert was born in 1797. When he was very young his father and his older brother taught him to play the violin and the piano. In a few months his proficiency surpassed. So when the family realized Franz abilities they did everything they could with their modest income to get a good education for the boy. He was sent to the Stadtkonvikt in Vienna.
Schubert left the Stadtkonvikt in 1813 to study teaching . During the three years that followed he worked as a low paid teacher. But he did not forget the music he loved. At this time he was extremely prolific. During a couple years he wrote two symphonies, 200-300 songs including the masterpiece "Gretchen am Spinnrade". All at the age of 17-18 years old. It was for the songs Schubert first became famous.
But during this time he began to have financial difficulties. In 1815 he met Franz von Schober, an independently wealthy follower of Schubert's music. He persuaded Schubert to leave the teaching job which was affecting his composing, and come and live with him. Schubert left his old job and was now a free musician, without a steady income.
It was at the home of Schober where Schubert met the great singer Johann Michael Vogl. Together they started the Schubertiads. They amused themselves, and together listened to Schubert at the piano and Vogl sing Schubert`s songs. Even if these were happy days, Schubert became anxious. He had no income and no home. He therefore worked one summer for a hungarian prince. He taught his two daughters to play the piano. But the only thing there, that could inspire Schubert's own composing was one of his pretty young students. Therefore much of the music from this time was written for piano four hands. But one summer was enough and he returned to his friends in Vienna.

    Franz Schubert (1797-1828)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Vienna, 31 January 1797; died there, 19 November 1828). The son of a schoolmaster, he showed an extraordinary childhood aptitude for music, studying the piano, violin, organ, singing and harmony and, while a chorister in the imperial court chapel, composition with Salieri (1808-13). By 1814 he had produced piano pieces settings of Schiller and Metastasio, string quartets, his first symphony and a three-act opera. Although family pressure dictated that he teach in his father's school, he continued to compose prolifically; his huge output of 1814-15 includes Gretchen am Spinnrade and (both famous for their text-painting) among numerous songs, besides two more symphonies, three masses and four stage works. From this time he enjoyed the companionship of several friends, especially Josef von Spaun, the poet Johann Mayrhofer and the law student Franz von Schober. Frequently gathering for domestic evenings of Schubert's music (later called 'Schubertiads'), this group more than represented the new phenomenon of an educated, musically aware middle class: it gave him an appreciative audience and influential contacts (notably the Sonnleithners and the baritone J.M. Vogl), as well as the confidence, in 1818, to break with schoolteaching. More songs poured out, including

Schubert biography by Bart Berman Franz Schubert (1797-1828) never achieved widespread fame during his lifetime , though he inspired intense loyalty and affection. The conventional schoolmaster, who was his father, did not include musicianship in his list of suitable professions, and Franz was prevented from becoming a child prodigy pianist-composer like Mozart Yet the consummate composer Schubert, from his 18th year onward ( Erlkönig ) tried hard to succeed. Wholeheartedly or not, he imitated Rossini's immensely popular style in his music to Rosamunde . He wrote a variety of choral works intended to win him support among the broad public of music lovers. And, encouraged by his friends, he wrote operas which, despite their excellent music, missed theatricality to make them stage worthy. Far from being an ivory tower composer, he sought to please those who for who his creations were made be they chamber music players, talented amateur singers, or the average concert-goer. Even the beloved piano impromptus need not give an impression of personal confessions, but, at most, that of a compromise between a genre not exclusively originating with Schubert
