ARNOLD SCHOENBERG: THE MINORITY OF THE "INCONCEIVABLE GOD"
by J. Edgar Bauer
A paper presented at The 1998 CESNUR International Conference, Center for Studies on New Religions, Torino, Italy
"From such an institution [i.e. the Israel Academy of Music] must go forth true priests of art who confront art with the same sense of consecration that the priest brings to God´s altar. For, just as God chose Israel whose task is to preserve, in spite of all suffering, the pure, true, mosaic monotheism, so it behooves Israeli musicians to offer the world a model possessed of the unique capacity to make our souls function once more in ways apt to further the development of humanity toward ever higher goals."
Arnold Schoenberg 1. The following remarks concerning Arnold Schoenberg´s reflections on the people of Israel as the minority of "the inconceivable God" concentrate on his treatment of the issue in the libretto of Moses und Aron th century. 2. Although Schoenberg was always very cautious in giving information about his private life and in spite of the precarious situation of research concerning his biography, his deeply religious character becomes evident to anyone confronting his numerous and constant efforts at articulating his own self-understanding. Without a doubt, the life of the Jewish-born Schoenberg was decisively influenced by his religious interests and options. At the age of 18 he converted to Protestantism in predominantly Catholic Vienna and in 1933 decided in Paris to return back to Judaism, as a reaction against the growing anti-Semitic tendencies he had been observing for years. Although raised in a Jewish-orthodox atmosphere, Schoenberg showed an early interest in Christian spirituality, especially that of the Quakers. His later correspondance reveals that his readings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, of Balzac´s Gnostic inspired novel "Seraphita" or of Rudolf Steiner had bearing on his aesthetic and musical conceptions.

Arnold Schoenberg
Arnold Schoenberg, (less frequently spelled Schönberg) (born, September 13, 1874, died July 13, 1951) was a composer, born in Vienna, Austria. He was largely self-taught, and in his twenties lived by orchestrating operettas while composing works such as the string sextet Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) in 1899. Much of his work was not well received and in 1907 his Chamber Symphony was an abandonment of tonality. He created the twelve-tone method of composition (which later grew into serialism), and founded the so-called Second Viennese School. He taught and greatly influenced Anton Webern and Alban Berg. He was forced into exile by the Nazis in 1933, settled in California and became a US citizen in 1941. He died in Los Angeles, California. Arnold Schoenberg: Composer, Bureaucrat
by Brad Edmonds Nearly everyone who has taken a college music appreciation course has heard of Arnold Schoenberg, the composer credited with developing the 12-tone serial(ism) technique for composing music. What is not known by most people outside the college music scene is that Schoenberg provides an exemplary model for the freedom-gobbling bureaucrats in Congress. The serialist composer lays out the 12 pitches of the chromatic scale in whatever order he desires. The composer then writes his music, using this 12-tone "row" repeatedly, usually exclusively. To create a greater source of material, the composer can use the row backwards or upside down as well as in the original form, but the order is maintained so that a given pitch, say C, doesn’t happen twice before every other pitch has been heard. The composer can have many versions of the row happening at once in different instruments. By contrast, in a Bach fugue in the key of C, every other pitch derives its meaning from its relationship to C. The casual listener knows when a phrase has ended in Bach much more readily than in serial music. A significant difference between tonal music, such as that of Bach, and serial music is that with tonal music, even the inexpert listener will have some idea whether the music was any good. With serial music, even the professional musician can have difficulty identifying famous works versus random, computer-generated sounds.

Detailed Information about Introduction (born Vienna, 13 September 1874; died Los Angeles, 13 July 1951).
Austro-Hungarian composer, an American citizen from 1941. He began violin lessons when he was eight and almost immediately started composing, though he had no formal training until he was in his late teens, when Zemlinsky became his teacher and friend (in 1910 he married Zemlinsky's sister). His first acknowledged works date from the turn of the century and include the string sextet as well as some songs, all showing influences from Brahms Wagner and Wolf . In 1901-3 he was in Berlin as a cabaret musician and teacher, and there he wrote the symphonic poem Pelleas und Melisande , pressing the Strauss ian model towards denser thematic argument and contrapuntal richness. He then returned to Vienna and began taking private pupils, Berg and Webern being among the first. He also moved rapidly forwards in his musical style. The large orchestra of Pelleas and the Gurrelieder , and for the next few years he lived in the new, rarefied musical air. With tonality had gone thematicism and rhythmic constraint; works tended to be short statements of a single extreme musical state, justifying the term 'expressionist' (Five Orchestral Pieces; Three Pieces and Six Little Pieces for piano). The larger pieces of this period have some appropriate dramatic content: the rage and despair of a woman seaching for her lover (
