entry for Peter Schickele
Schickele, Peter
b. 17 July 1935, Ames,Iows,USA. Peter Schickele was a composer and humorist who, although he also wrote serious classical music, gained popularity through his satirical compositions recorded as the fictitious character PDQ Bach. Schickele and his family moved to Washington, DC, when he was eight-years-old and there he became exposed to the satirical jazz of Spike Jones . At the age of 12, Schickele moved to North Dakota where he became involved in theatre, learnt to play the bassoon and studied classical music. He became a classical composer while attending college in New York, where he settled in his 20s. He also discovered jazz, fold and rock music while at school, all of which he would later draw on in his composing. Schickele developed the concept of PDQ Bach in 1953. While experimenting with a primitive tape recorder, he taped the first movement of Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto performing all of the wind parts on bassoon. Inspired by one of Bach's few humorous pieces

Peter Schickele: decades of photos I have had the pleasure of photographing Peter Schickele nearly every year since 1976. Most of the time he comes with ideas pretty thoroughly worked out, and I just make them into good photos, but sometimes he has just a sketch of an idea, and we work together to flesh it out (although the fleshiest one, Ears Wide Shut, was all his planning). And just once, he had no idea whatever for a two piano concerto, and I thought of the pianists duelling with pistols. Peter Schickele (born July 17 ) is a composer and musical parodist. He was born in Ames, Iowa , and graduated with a degree in music from Swarthmore in 1957. He graduated from the Juilliard School with an M.S. in musical composition He has created music for school bands, film (eg Silent Running ) and television, choirs, folk singers, musicals and concert performances. His musical creations have won him multiple awards. He is perhaps best known for his clever parodies of classical music, written under the name of P. D. Q. Bach ," for which he has won four Grammy Awards . He hosted the radio program "Schickele Mix" which was broadcast on many public radio stations in the United States. Besides writing music, Schickele invented instruments. The most complicated is the hardart , so called because it is used in the Concerto for Horn and Hardart. It consists of a variety of tone-generating devices mounted on a frame. He also invented the dill piccolo (for playing sour notes), the left-handed sewer flute, the tromboon, and the tuba mirum.

Composer, musician, author, satirist—Peter Schickele is known to keep an audience in stitches with his zany new show, Jekyll and Hyde . In the first part of the program, Schickele is the goofy professor who discovered the hopelessly inept composer, P.D.Q. Bach. Schickele cleverly blends verbal puns, physical comedy and musical spoofs into his satire. Later in the show, Schickele launches into another persona, and entertains with musical party games: three-part rounds with ridiculous words, a lampoon of French lyrics and a medley of ‘60s-style songs. Schickele is internationally recognized as one of the most versatile artists in the field of music. His commissions are wide and varied, and include arranging one of the musical segments for Disney's "Fantasia 2000." All the humor and style of Peter Schickele comes together in his new work, Jekyll and Hyde , at Staller this season.

May 24, 2004: Important Message from Prof. Schickele
George Harrison Was Right
When the curmudgeonly Beatle called one of his solo albums All Things Must Pass , he wasn’t just whistlin’ Dixie: they really must. Things, I mean. Pass. And that includes the quite amazing run of late-December P.D.Q. Bach concerts in New York City, a run that started in 1965 and lasted unbroken (well, almost unbroken: there were no concerts in 1969) through 2003. In recent years the annual P.D.Q. fests have been increasingly difficult to sustain; unlike orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, we have had no endowment or large (or
