Gassmann Wiener Musiklebens bekannt machte ( unter anderem P. Metastasio und C. W. Gluck ) 1766 nach Wien; ab 1770 Opernkomponist mit wechselndem Erfolg; 1774 im Alter von 24 Jahren Hofkompositor, 1788 Hofkapellmeister. Hatte 1784-87 große Erfolge in Paris, wurde als Nachfolger C. W. Glucks gefeiert und galt als " musikalischer Papst" Wiens. Nach dem Tod Josephs II. zog er sich immer mehr aus dem Salieri Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien (Erarbeitung der Statuten des Konservatoriums) und stellte das musikalische Wiener Kongress Schubert , L. von Beethoven , F. Through the family of Mocenigo he obtained free admission to the choir school of St Marks, Venice. In 1766 he was taken to Vienna by F. L. Gassmann, who introduced him to the emperor Joseph. His first opera, Le Donne letterate, was produced at the Burg-Theater in 1770. Others followed in rapid succession, and his Armith1 (1771) was a triumphant success.
