Ars Musica Kaija SAARIAHO Kaija Saariaho est née en Finlande en 1952. Depuis 1982, elle vit et travaille à Paris. Elle a étudié la composition avec Paavo Heininen à l'Académie Sibelius, puis avec Brian Ferneyhough et Klaus Huber à la Musikhochschule de Fribourg. En 1982, elle a suivi des cours d'informatique musicale à l'IRCAM et, depuis lors, l'ordinateur joue un rôle essentiel dans sa musique. Ses oeuvres les plus significatives sont Verblendungen (pour orchestre et bande magnétique, 82-84), Lichtbogen (pour ensemble, bande magnétique et électronique, (86-87) et la Stilleben (87-88). En 1986, elle a partagé avec Richard Barrett le Kranichsteiner Musikpreis et a obtenu en 1988 le prix Italia pour Stilleben . Kaija Saariaho a bénéficié d'une bourse du gouvernement finlandais pour ses travaux de composition. Pd Repertory Project: Kaija Saariaho's Noanoa back to PDRP homepage Contents: Introduction Performance instructions Guide to the patch (not ready yet) Introduction back to top This piece, for flute and live electronics, was published in 1991 with an accompanying CDROM, which contains a Max patch and 33 soundfiles. The Max patch played the soundfiles on cue (over an old version of ProTools) and controlled two "effects boxes" which are now obsolete. The "MIDI system dumps" for these effects boxes are included on the CDROM, but are of course useless. The effects in question include "inifinite" reverberation, a "speech reverberation" whose reverb time reacted to the power of the incoming signal, and a dual pitch shifter with feedback. These were reverse engineered by listening to Camilla Hoitenga's published recording of the piece. The piece requires the flutist to step on a foot pedal at 64 points during the (roughly ten-minute) piece. We haven't tried replacing the pedal mechanism with the score follower yet. Performance instructions back to top (See also the general performance instructions To perform Noanoa , you need both the Pd patch (provided here) and also the soundfiles, which are on the CDROM which accompanies the published score. You must copy these files off the CDROM and install them where the patch will find them. If, for example, the Noanoa patch is found in the directory, /usr/local/lib/271/patch/saariaho-noanoa, you can put the sounds in /usr/local/lib/271/sound/noanoa. They will be in AIFF format, with names like "NoaNoa-02-qlist-cmd0.aiff".

La musique de Kaija SAARIAHO glisse à haute altitude, au-dessus du terrestre et de l'eau. L'air est son élément, l'espace sa quête continuelle. Eminente collaboratrice de l'IRCAM, Parisienne depuis vingt ans, Kaija a toujours préservé son lien avec la Finlande. Du peintre Albert EDELFELT au poète Pentti HOLAPPA, en passant par les écrivains Mika WALTARI et Veijo MERI, d'autres grands artistes finlandais sont passés par Paris. Tous y ont pris la mesure de cette « anti-Finlande » : une métropole en manque d'oxygène, de lointains et de silence. Entre le bruit et le son... « Couleurs du vent », « Miracle de la lumière », « Lune », « A la fumée », « Grammaire des rêves »... les compositions de Kaija font jouer la frontière entre l'humain et le naturel. Seule l'électronique permet de telles incursions aux confins de l'univers sonore. L'électronique conçue par Kaija garde ouverte les routes de l'improvisation : en concert, elle autorise une création libre et instantanée, contournant l'aspect « mise en boîte » figé et parfois glacial, avatar habituel de l'ordinateur. C'est le concept de « Live electronics » que Kaija a amplement contribué à développer. By John von Rhein Chicago Tribune music critic July 8, 2002 By far the finest music-making I heard over the weekend came on behalf of the impressive Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, whose "Aile du songe" ("Wing of the Dream") received its U.S. premiere here on Saturday one of the few pieces of new music Ravinia is presenting this season. Camilla Hoitenga, to whom the score is dedicated, was the brilliant flute soloist. Taking her cue from poems by Saint-John Perse, Saariaho has produced a sound-world that shimmers with beauty and wonder. The two sections are filled with images of birds in flight at once living things that mediate between sky and land, and metaphors for the mysteries of life. Rising in intervals suggestive of Asian musical scales, the flute's avian whistles and flutterings draw delicate responses from instruments of the orchestra, primarily exotic percussion. Hoitenga produced an incredible array of played, sung and spoken sounds, while Eschenbach and the CSO made sympathetic partners. I haven't heard a better piece of new music all year. BACK

Des vagues sur la mer. Sur la scène transformée en plan d'eau, la barque lumineuse emmène le troubadour Jaufré Rudel de son pays d'Oc vers Tripoli, dans la Terre Sainte du Levant. Il y part rejoindre Clémence, son " amour de loin " qu'il n'a jamais vue et qu'il chante pourtant, convaincu à distance de sa beauté. La traversée tourne mal. Prisma A à la rencontre de différents langages Prisma, CD-audio accompagné d'un CD-Rom consacré au compositeur contemporain Kaija Saariaho , vient d'être distribué dans les bacs par l'éditeur phonographique Naïve. Un paradoxe pour cette œuvre multimédia innovante, qui a dû se frayer un chemin singulier pour accéder au public. Ce qui frappe d'emblée dans Prisma , œuvre multimédia de Jean-Baptiste Barrière consacrée au travail du compositeur contemporain finlandais Kaija Saariaho, c'est la place qu'elle accorde à l'émotion. Un expérience rare pour ce type de création, souvent réduite à une démarche seulement informative ou technique, et que l'académie Charles-Cros a voulu récompenser en 2000 en lui attribuant son grand prix multimédia. L'Œuvre ouverte d'Umberto Eco (Le Seuil, 1990), permettant de manipuler les fragments musicaux de manière combinatoire, librement ou suivant les règles d'écriture de la compositrice. Là encore, surprise : l'expérience auditive issue du regroupement aléatoire de différents fragments est cohérente, "agréable" oserait-on écrire. Une cohérence que l'on retrouve, dans l'ensemble du CD-rom, dans les assemblages parfois inattendus entre textes, entretiens, extraits sonores et images animées.

Welcome Saariaho Keith Gallasch This was a special experience. Saariaho is a distinctive composer, often blending acoustic instruments with electronics, often with a dramatic intensity but also an unbroken line of development that separates her from her modernist peers and precursors and aligns her somewhat with eastern European and Russian composers but without their melancholic spirituality. I’d had the pleasure of immersing myself in her Prisma CD before attending the concert. It includes Dawn Upshaw singing Lonh , Anssi Karttunen playing the cello work Pres , and Camilla Hoitenga on flute for NoaNoa . In concert, soprano Alison Morgan managed admirably the sudden shifts from full voice to spoken word to whisper, sustaining the stream of sound that marks the work, faultlessly mixing it with the electronics and recorded voices. Pres is a more intense, argumentative work. I thought Geoffrey Gartner’s attack was bordering on the romantic, but listening again to Karttunen’s slightly more austere approach, I reckoned the difference was primarily a visual one. Witnessing the demands on the player in concert is a reminder of how much the CD experience can be an abstraction of a performance. Gartner’s performance was a fine one, fluent in the gearshifts in the second movement over its propulsive foundation and organic in his approach to the passionate, often moody third.
