Brief biography:
Rossini was born into a musical family. His father played the horn and his mother sang opera. The young Gioacchino was taught how to play the horn and sing by his father. He first appeared in an opera when he was seven and was composing his first symphony at age seventeen. He married Isabelle Colgran in 1815 (when he was 23). From 1810 to 1823 he performed operas in Italy. In 1812 he wrote 7 operas in a 16 month period, all but one were comedies. In 1815 Rossini went to Naples as musical and artistic director of the Teatro San Carlo. Which lead to him concentrating on writing serious opera. He did however write a comedy called Il barbiere di Siviglia which is considered one of the greatest Italian Comedies of all time. It was originally a failure but it quickly became loved and gained the respect of

The Life of Gioacchino Antonio Rossini
Of necessity the change in musical taste has pushed the old Italian masters of opera into the background. But they are by no means totally neglected. Wagner has not captured all the opera-goers! There are still a vast number who recognise charm of melody and clearness of musical form, and prefer an opera in which voices and orchestra are used with discrimination and taste, neither striving for mastery over the other. In spite of great advances, many still take the view that Haydn took when he wrote:
"Let your air be good, and your composition, whatever it be, will be so likewise, and will assuredly delight. It is the soul of music, the life, the spirit, the essence of a composition. Without it theorists may succeed in discovering and using the most singular chords and combinations, but nothing is heard after all but a laboured sound, which, though it may not vex the ear, leaves the head empty and the heart cold and unaffected by it."
To those who agree with Haydn the Rossini school is always welcome. Its chief exponents, besides Rossini himself, were Donizetti and Bellini, and the surviving operas of the three may now be considered.

Based on the comedy by Beaumarchais, the opera resounds with Rossini's brilliant arias, ensemble numbers, and his famous crescendos. Among his many other operas are L'italiana in Algeri La Cenerentola (1817), and Semiramide (1823). In 1824, Rossini became the director of the ThEAtre-Italien in Paris. After the production of his William Tell at the Paris OpEra in 1829, he stopped composing operas, and during the remaining 39 years of his life he wrote only songs, piano pieces, and a setting of the Stabat Mater (1842), in which his operatic style is still evident.

Gioacchino Rossini
Gioacchino Rossini was one of the lucky few composers to receive fame and fortune for his work during his lifetime. Today, well over a hundred years after his death, his operas are still among the favorites of opera lovers everywhere.
In 1801, young Gioacchino started playing the viola in a carnival orchestra. He also studied French horn, singing, and composition. When the family moved to Bologna, he studied harpsichord, violin, viola, cello, and composition. He also began singing professionally.
The Barber of Seville, The Barber of Seville again.
Cinderella La Cenerentola in Italian), another popular opera, was written by Rossini in about three weeks in 1817. It is unusual because Cinderella is played by a contralto (low-voiced woman) rather than a soprano (high-voiced woman). Rossini cleverly changed the type of song Cinderella sings to show her rise from serving girl to princess. Her first aria is simple, but after she tries on the glass slipper, she sings a much fancier aria.

Gioacchino Antonio Rossini G ioacchino Antonio Rossini was born Pesaro, on 29 February 1792 and he died Passy, on 13 November 1868. His parents were musicians, his father a horn player, his mother a singer; he learnt the horn and singing and as a boy sang in at least one opera in Bologna, where the family lived. He studied there and began his operatic career when, at 18, he wrote a one-act comedy for Venice. Further commissions followed, from Bologna, Ferrara, Venice again and Milan, where La pietra del paragone was a success at La Scala in 1812. This was one of seven operas written in 16 months, all but one of them comic.
T writing, has claims to be considered the greatest of all Italian comic operas, eternally fresh in its wit and its inventiveness. It dates from 1816; initially it was a failure, but it quickly became the most loved of his comic works, admired alike by Beethoven and Verdi. The next year saw La Cenerentola, a charmingly sentimental tale in which the heroine moves from a touching folksy ditty as the scullery maid to brilliant coloratura apt to a royal maiden. R
A mong the masterpieces from this period are Maometto II (1820) and, written for Venice at the end of his time in Naples, Semiramide (1823). Barbaia gave a Viennese season in 1822; Rossini and his wife returned to Bologna, then in 1823 left for London and Paris where he took on the directorship of the Théâtre-Italien, composing for that theatre and the Opéra. Some of his Paris works are adaptations (Le siège de Corinthe and Moïse et Pharaon); the Opéra comique Le Comte Ory is part-new, Guillaume Tell wholly. This last, widely regarded as his chef d'oeuvre, and very long, is a rich tapestry of his most inspired music, with elaborate orchestration, many ensembles, spectacular ballets and processions in the French tradition, opulent orchestral writing and showing a new harmonic boldness.
