Fernab vom Hauptstrom kultureller Entwicklungen im übrigen Europa, entstand in Schweden und überhaupt in Skandinavien erst spät eine Musik von nationalem Gepräge. Zwar gab es in den verstreuten Siedlungen der nördlichen Länder das altüberlieferte musikalische Volksgut, das darauf wartete, von den Musikgelehrten entdeckt zu werden, doch die Kunstmusik, die man in den Hauptstädten und an den Höfen brauchte, ließ man sich bis zum 18. Jahrhundert in der Regel von Musikern schreiben, die aus dem Süden stammten. Roman, der erste schwedische Komponist, dessen Musik gleichsam „europäischen" Rang erreichte, begann seine musikalische Karriere als jugendlicher Violinvirtuose. Seine Gönnerin wurde die Prinzessin und spätere Königin Ulrica Eleonora, die ihm das Studium in London ermöglichte. 1720 kehrte Roman nach Schweden zurück. Einige Jahre darauf wurde er zum Hofmusikdirektor ernannt, doch mußte er sechs Jahre später aus gesundheitlichen Gründen für zwei Jahre in den Süden übersiedeln.

He was an accomplished executant, the violin and the oboe being his principal instruments, although he is said to have played many others besides, and his output in the field of instrumental music is comprehensive, ranging from works for a large orchestral ensemble to compositions for solo violin. Roman's significance did not escape posterity in his own country and many eighteenth century writers and chroniclers testify to the importance of the role which he played in Swedish musical life. In 1727 Roman published his twelve Sonate a flavto traverso, violino e cembalo in Stockholm. At a later date, probably at about 1740, it seems that he planned the publication of some works for solo violin (Assaggi a Violino solo). The remainder of Roman's surviving compositions is only available in manuscript form, and although several are in the composer's own hand the bulk of them survives in that of copyists. The source material is in other words, in a state of considerable confusion. This confusion reigns above all in the Roman collection of the Royal Academy of Music, Stockholm, by far the largest and most important source, where there is an abundance of discrepancies; as late as the 1920s the formidable task of binding the whole collection was undertaken with the deplorable result that the MSS were arranged in what is, at best, an arbitrary fashion.

Movitz On Line Johan Helmich Roman and the Horn Roman´s Connection to the Pioneers of Swedish Horn Playing by Originally published in Movitz nr 4 (December 1994) Translated by Anita Andersson This year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Johan Helmich Roman (1694-1758) and 250 years since his work, Drottningholm Music was composed. A festive occasion and certainly reason enough to celebrate the "Father of Swedish Music", which is the epithet that music historians have given him. But for we horn players, there is yet another reason to celebrate. Roman was the first Swedish composer to use the horn in the orchestra. By examining his compositions in general and the horn parts in particular, we get a chance to catch a glimpse of the horn players then active - the horn players who most likely were the first in our country. The Parts Reflected the Musicians Many 18th century pieces of music were created with a special orchestra in mind. Often the composer knew the musicians he wrote for, and in these cases one should be able to read the musician's musical qualities and shortcomings from the individual parts. This goes not the least for the horn players, who had a particularly moody instrument to master. The standard must have varied considerably during the first century of the horn. Amongst the 18th century orchestral pieces this is very obvious, i. e. with Bach and Haydn. Bach had Gottfried Reiche, the celebrated trumpeter and hornist in Leipzig. Haydn had a succession of prominent horn players for whom he sometimes wrote very demanding parts. There is a marked difference in the use of the horns in the Esterhazy orchestra versus the orchestras in London. Can one conclude, to judge from Haydn's own horn writing that the horn technique was not as developed in England at this time, or was it that the abilities of the London hornists was unknown to Haydn?
