In other fields of art, it has been used to describe the plays of Samuel Beckett, or the films of Robert Bresson, or the stories of Raymond Carver, for example.

A minimalist painting, for example, will typically use a limited number of colours, and have a simple geometric design. Among the most notable minimalists in the visual arts are Frank Stella, Donald Judd and Carl Andre (See List of minimalist artists).

28. Rhythmos | Terry Riley Interview
Rhythmos interviews terry riley, about ambient music.
http://www.qaswa.com/rhythmos/terry.html
Ambient music has been around for centuries, take the call of Whales, or the drone of a dijereedoo, it's only recently in the 70's that 'ambient' has been used as a term to classify music. Brian Eno was, in the main, responsible for this, with his concept of threshold hearing. Eno was very influenced by a generation of composers whose work came to prominence in the 60's - the minimalists, central of whom is the california based composer Terry Riley.
Question :
Basically tell us who you are.
Terry Riley :
Well I guess my music came to prominence around one piece called 'In C' which I wrote in 1964 at that time it was called 'The Global Villages for Symphonic Pieces', because it was a piece built out of 53 simple patterns and the structure was new to music at that time. No one had done anything like this before were you just had a piece built all out of patterns and the first concerts of 'In C' were kind of big communal events where a lot of people would come out and sometimes listen or dance to the music because the music would get quite ecstatic with all these repeated patterns. Although repetition is a major force in music it was never used in this way before. So, essentially my contribution was to introduce repetition into Western music as the main ingredient without any melody over it, without anything just repeated patterns, musical patterns. In the nut shell that was my own introduction into the world of western music.
Q: What were you doing before 'In C' came out?

TERRY RILEY
Interview by Theresa Stern (March 1997)
Being a legend and an innovator isn't all it's cracked up to be. You get all these crazy interview requests like the one you find here. Terry Riley definitely caused a stir with IN C from 1964, launching the minimalist movement in music. Later, Philip Glass, Steve Reich and a host of new age artists took up the banner of his ideas. Even in rock music, you'll find bands like the Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth who have been well-versed in his work. Like any good artist, he isn't content to rest on his laurels though as his work has been heard in a Carnegie Hall anniversary, been nomiated for a Grammy, and performed by numerous artists and ensembles. And of course, this restlessness has also meant continued recording and touring, including a series of solo piano concerts. Special thanks to World Music Institute
PSF: How did the idea for your all-night concerts come about? I was asked to do that by the Philadelphia College of Art for the first time around 1967 or 1968. They wanted to have a concert in an art gallery where people could bring their families and sleep in hammocks and sleeping bags. They could relax, listen to music or sleep. After that I did a tour with Intermedia '68 in New York and there were a lot more after that.
PSF: How did you find that kind of experience?

http://www.otherminds.org/shtml/Riley.shtml

Born in 1935 in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Northern California, Terry Riley launched what is now known as the Minimalist movement with his revolutionary classic In C in 1964. This seminal work provided the conception for a form comprised of interlocking repetitive patterns that was to change the course of 20th-century music and strongly influence the works of Steve Reich, Philip Glass and John Adams, as well as rock groups like The Who, The Soft Machine, Curved Air, Tangerine Dream and many others. In the 1960s and '70s he turned his attention to solo improvisational works for electronic keyboards and soprano saxophone, and pioneered the use of various kinds of tape delay in live performance. This approach resulted in another set of milestone works, A Rainbow in Curved Air Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band The Persian Surgery Dervishes and Shri Camel . These hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, brightly orchestrated, eastern-flavored improvisations set the stage for the New Age movement that was to appear a decade or so later. Terry Riley has written for a variety of new-music soloists and ensembles, including the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Array Music of Toronto, Zeitgeist, Stephen Scott's bowed piano ensemble, The California Ear Unit, guitarist David Tanenbaum, the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio, pianist Werner Baertschi and the Amati string quartet. In 1989, he formed the new performance ensemble KHAYAL which specializes in group vocal and instrumental improvisation. In 1992, he formed a small theater company, The Travelling Avantt-Gaard to perform his opera/theater piece

Shri Camel (1978). Terry Riley
In January, I ended up listening most to three albums: Philip Glass: Early Keyboard Music (new recordings of 60s compositions), Terry Riley 's Shri Camel from the 70s, and Return to Forever(featuring Chick Corea)'s Where Have I Known You Before from the 70s. The Philip Glass pieces are generally hard-core minimalism played on organ, the Riley is "loopy" minimalism played on altered organ, and Return to Forever plays jazz-rock fusion on electric keyboards (with guitar, bass and drums). To cope with the different but similar music, I placed them on a continuum from rigorous/hard/composed/serious to casual/light/improvised/fun. And Shri Camel falls exactly in the middle of that spectrum, neither too heavy nor frivolous. The CD notes that Shri Camel is "composed and performed live-improvised" on an electronic organ tuned in just intonation with digital delay. That timbre plus the improvisational feel clicked for me. For what it is worth, Keith Potter, in the book

Main
Sun Rings (2002). Terry Riley
The Kronos Quartet presented Sun Rings by Terry Riley . This is a multi-media work for string quartet, chorus, and pre-recorded sounds. Those sounds include recordings by NASA spacecraft journeying through space e.g. ambient space sounds found in plasma around the planet Jupiter. The sounds have been a part of Don Gurnett 's research at the University of Iowa. Willie Williams did the visual design. Williams was notably the visual designer on U2's Zoo tour among other rock shows. Riley also sought inspiration after the events of , seeking meaning from the universe. He was present at the concert Friday night. So, will this work become part of the standard quartet repetoire? Probably not. Would it make a good DVD that might stand up to repeated viewings? Probably. The music itself varied in intensity and color. The movements with chorus may have been the most effective. The sounds were somewhat disconnected from the music, although the musicians from time to time would wave their arm over a device on the music stand that would temporarily accent the on-going space sounds. The percussion was pre-recorded. The visuals were shown mostly on a large screen behind the quartet. Each movement usually had a particular visual theme; spinning gyroscopes, science fiction-like views of a satellite, the planet Earth (with little emotional impact), the planet Jupiter (with surprising intensity), etc. At one point, a kaleidoscope of red was projected onto the sides of the theatre, with some impact. The chorus was only visible through the screen, which led to guessing if in fact they were live or had also been pre-taped, which was somewhat disorienting. Williams quote in the program notes indicated he wanted to avoid the standard "planetarium" experience; as a result, the video was not as "cosmic" and spectacular as one might imagine.

I have had to live happily with its blessings and its curses even though its creation on a Spring night of 1964 took only a few hours to pen. There have been several diverse takes on this set of 53 patterns. The psychedelic innocence that gave birth to this music has long since dissolved into cyberworlds that rule the double 00s and yet it has somehow survived. It has not only survived but flourished as an anthem of triumph in this fantasia directed by Walter Boudreau, with SMCQ and Raôul Duguay (recorded live in 1997). This is a brilliant conception, I only whish I had thought of it myself." Terry Riley.
