Reich, Steve (1936 - )
The experimental American composer Steve Reich studied the work of the philsopher Wittgenstein at Cornell University, subsequently studying composition with Milhaud and with Berio. He showed an early interest in electro-acoustic music, then in the music of Africa. His music has experimented particularly with the multiple use of the same instrument and forms of exact but not simultaneous repetition. Instrumental Music Steve Reich's instrumental music includes Variations for wind, strings and keyboard, Music for 18 Musicians and a number of works that make use of unusual combinations of instruments, often a variety of percussion instruments, with recorded tape.

Steve Reich
When i was a freshman in high school, before I knew anything about Music Theory, when I couldn't tell the difference between Bach and Stravinsky, when I was still caught up in the 80s pop rock trend of Def Leppard, Duran Duran, and Paula Abdul, one of my friends played for me the last movement of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint , and I thought it was one of the most incredible things I had ever heard. All of Reich's music has certain signature characteristics that affect me in many ways. His rich harmonies and their gradual unfolding give me a sense of calm, or maybe a feeling of slowly becoming awake. His use of rhythmic pulsation sometimes creates in me a push or a moving forward, and sometimes gives me the feeling of serenity, like the crashing of waves. His use of rhythmic complexity drives me and grooves me. His process of gradual shifting, beit melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, or textural, fascinates me and challenges my ears and my mind, which tries to figure out exactly what I'm hearing and if it's really important. Sometimes Reich's music is able to do all of these things at once. That type of feeling is impossible to describe.

why this music is interesting, important, and maybe even fun. [rgable]
Music for 18 Musicians (1978). Steve Reich
Rob, a Brit in Sweden writing About Pip , blogs his Top Five desert island discs a la Nick Hornby's High Fidelity . Good choices like Springsteen's The Wild, The Innocent and The E-Street Shuffle , Philip Glass' Powaqqatsi , Glenn Gould's Bach, and the Smiths' The Queen Is Dead . Interestingly, he has to choose between Steve Reich's Music for Mallet Instruments, Voice, and Organ and Reich's Music for 18 Musicians and goes for the latter: Nevertheless, it has to be one of the pieces of music that gets close to describing how I experience the world. It's like I've always heard it Pretentious, s'pose so. Buy it, listen to it. He also relays his High Fidelity/Jack Black-like encounter in a music store when he first hears this music. Despite the superior form and impact of this minimalist breakthrough, I have a slight personal preference for Music for Mallet Instruments, Voice, and Organ The Mojo Collection , a list of the greatest popular music albums, has this to say about Music for 18 Musicians ...sublime, with moments of stunning beauty - particularly in the multiple piano sections, and the huge arcs of bass clarinets and voices that crop up as a recurring motif.

    http://phase.sourceforge.net/
    Random Phase Music Generator
    Download
The Random Phase Music Generator is available here . A mirror is available at ibiblio
    Description
This is a small program that generates random phase music. Random music has been around for a long time (from Mozart's musical dice game to John Cage's chance music), but phase music was invented rather recently by Steve Reich. It would be interesting to combine those ideas, so I have written this program as a tool for further experiments.
    Requirements
You need X version 11 and Motif 1.2 (or compatible). In addition, if you want audio playback, a MIDI file player for your platform is needed.
    Files
    README
    Imakefile
    Makefile.man
    phase.c
    How To Install
Type xmkmf and then make to compile the program. LessTif users, replace xmkmf with mxmkmf
    Manual Installation
If your xmkmf is broken, you have to install manually. Edit Makefile.man (examples for Solaris, AIX and LessTif are provided). Make sure INCS and LIBS are pointing to the correct directories, then type make -f Makefile.man to compile.
