Max Reger The German master Max Reger died at the age of only 43, but he wrote a vast quantity of music - often in large forms, and with opus numbers that encompassed groups of works, not just single compositions. His musical mind was that of a genius: being able to write music in almost any circumstances, and music that was often of great contrapuntal complexity. He was a composer at variance with the Romantic movements; his output, like Brahms's, was exclusively for the concert hall, the recital room, and - more importantly, in Reger's case - the church, for he was a magnificent organist who wrote a large amount of music for the instrument. In this regard, his spiritual predecessor was Johann Sebastian Bach, whose music Reger revered above all other. At Max Reger's sudden death - about which there has always been some speculation - he left well over 200 works catalogued, with a large number of uncatalogued original compositions and 'arrangements'. Max Reger R eger is considered by many to be the most important composer to elaborate on the stylistic traits of Johannes Brahms and move German music into the twentieth century. A part from Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, Hugo Wolf or Arnold Schoenberg most German composers of the period around 1900 have for long been largely forgotten. Max Reger (1873-1916) is one of them, others are Hans Pfitzner, Ferruccio Busoni, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Franz Schmidt or Alexander von Zemlinsky. B D uring a concert stay in Karlsruhe in 1907 Reger received his appointment as university musical director and professor at the royal conservatoire at Leipzig; he retained his concert and composition activities while resigning from his post as university musical director as soon as in 1908. Instead, he accepted in 1911 the position of the Court conductor at Meiningen which he held until the beginning of 1914. The intense composition and concert activities were retained also after he had moved to Jena in 1915, whence he once a week went to Leipzig for his teaching duties. On one of these trips, Reger succumbed a heart failure in May 1916. D R eger attained continuous fame above all through his organ works, although he also achieved significance in the fields of chamber music, lieder, choral and orchestral composition.

M ax Reger werd geboren in Brand (Beieren) op 19 maart 1873. Van moeder kreeg hij zijn eerste pianolessen en erfde een fijnbesnaard temperament. Naast onderwijzer was vader Reger tevens docent muziek aan de secundaire school; zo kon hij ook zelf zijn zoon begeleiden bij diens eerste stappen op viool, cello en orgel. I n 1886 trekt Max zelf ook naar de secundaire school, en ontvangt klavieronderricht bij Lindner. Na een bezoek aan Bayreuth beslist hij musicus te worden. Op aanbeveling van Lindner gaat hij in het Conservatorium van Sonderhausen bij Hugo Riemann compositie en theorie studeren. Een jaar later is hij al leraar aan datzelfde Conservatorium, zodat de dringendste financiële problemen van de baan zijn. Als Riemann naar Wiesbaden gepromoveerd wordt, volgt Reger hem op, en als Riemann ten slotte in Leipzig benoemd wordt, neemt Reger zijn functie over in Wiesbaden. Intussen volbrengt hij zijn legerdienst, maar wordt na negen maanden ontslagen wegens een halsziekte.

Parry Dudley Buck John Knowles Paine Leo Sowerby Max Reger b. Brand, Bavaria, March 19, 1873 d. Leipzig, Germany, May 11, 1916 Biography Born in Brand, Max Reger's family moved to Weider, Germay in 1874. He studied at the Realschiule, but his earliest training in harmonium and piano was from his father. He received organ lessons from Lindner. In 1889 Reger received an acceptance letter from the great organ teacher Hugo Reimann at the Sonderhausen Conservatory, and in April of 1890 Reger left home to study with him, even changing schools when Reimann left Sonderhausen for the Weisbaden Conservatore in April 1891. Reger was the first German composer since J.S. Bach to devote so much of his compositional output to the organ. He believed strongly in absolute music, an ideal shared by Bach. Reger's pieces are incredibly pianistic and virtuosic, while still exploring the symphonic colors of the organ.
