January 29, 2002 Amazon Products Maurice Ravel plays Ravel The mere mention of his name brings ‘Bolero' to mind, and of course I am playing it now as I begin to tell you about the man and his music. With its relentless, pulsating rhythm, this bravura piece for orchestra is probably Maurice Ravel's best known work. ‘Bolero' was choreographed as a ballet by Bronislava Nijinska (the sister of Vaslav Nijinsky) and was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1928. It was an overnight sensation. Fifty years later ‘Bolero' again fired the public imagination when Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean brought the dance to millions of viewers when they used it for their winning Olympic, World, and European ice dance titles in 1983-4. In the original ballet production set in a Spanish tavern, a gypsy girl begins the dance on a trestle table with slow seductive movements. Gradually other dancers are drawn in so that by the end everyone is taking part. Built on a languid hypnotic rhythm that never lets up, the sinuous melody gradually rises to an impassioned climax as the dancers lose themselves in wild self abandon.

He met Erik Satie who also had a considerable influence on his artistic development. He eventually developed a style of his own which the critics often described as cold blooded and artificial. In later years he based some of his finest works on the Oriental scales he had heard at the 1889 Paris Exhibition. Ravel led a quiet life and never held an official post. Maurice Ravel Works Ravel wrote two operas, the first, described as a comèdie-musicale, L'heure espagnole (The Spanish Clock) and the second, with a libretto by Colette, the imaginative L'enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Enchantments), in which the naughty child is punished when furniture and animals assume personalities of their own. Ravel wrote his ballet Daphnis et Chloè in response to a commission from the Russian impresario Dyagilev. The work, described as a symphonie chorèographique is based on the Hellenistic pastoral novel of Longus.

From Madonna to Maurice Ravel, this William is in Orbit
By Donna Freydkin Reporting for CNN Interactive February 9, 2000 Web posted at: 6:12 p.m. EST (2312 GMT) (CNN) You might think that after taking home two Grammys in 1998 for his collaboration with Madonna on "Ray of Light" and thus becoming something of a household name producer William Orbit would be content. But while he gamely talks about his collaboration with the Spiritual Girl on her smash album, you can't blame the studio whiz for seeking his own moment in the sun.

World Changes
France had suffered defeat to Prussia (Germany) in the War of 1870 and was in an upheaval. French arts were flourishing, but the legal system was in decay. It was the age of emerging science, the climax of railways, and the beginning of aviation. In 1875, when Maurice Ravel was born, the world was in a big hurry to change. Today we are also facing a time of great change in the world. How many changes have you seen so far in your life?
Home Life
Maurice Ravel was born on March 7, 1875, at Ciboure near the Spanish border. He had a Swiss father and a Basque mother, but his family really came from France. Maurice's father was a highly skilled engineer and inventor. Ravel adored his mother. They were a happy family! When Maurice was three years old, his brother ‰douard was born. The brothers were close all their lives.

Maurice Ravel was born on the 7th of March 1875 in this house, to a Basque mother Marie Deluart (Mme Ravel) and Swiss Father Joseph Ravel, he was Christened Joseph Maurice Ravel just weeks after his birth, in the little 16th century Church of Saint Vincent (Just behind the house), he only lived here for approximately 3 - 4 months before the family moved to Montmartre in Paris for the reasons of his Fathers profession. There he was brought up amongst artists & musicians, which must have influenced his future career tremendously. Each year he returned to Ciboure for the annual family holiday (even after the deaths of his Parents he continued for nearly the rest of his life). On one of these holidays in 1928 Maurice Ravel wrote the famous melody "Bolero" in a small Hotel in Ciboure the Anchochury. Maurice Ravel died on the morning of the 28th of December 1937 and was buried with his Parents in the cemetery of Levallois Perret............

Of How Maurice Ravel Fell Sick, and How He Died
A play in two acts by Eric R. Pfeffinger
French composer Maurice Ravel's final days were plagued with a mysterious brain affliction which, while not impeding his normal thought processes, impaired his motor skills and ability to communicate. It's a horrible fate for anyone, but especially for someone who has made his life and reputation out of artistic expression, whose musical compositions move audiences alternately to hisses and to standing ovations, who has expended considerable energy giving voice to the music which now plays maddeningly only in his head. It's also a frustratingly appropriate fate for someone who, in this play loosely based on biography, has expended even more energy throughout his life eschewing the risks of personal intimacy. Given the conflicted obstinacy with which Maurice has distanced himself from his envious brother Edouard and his friend and admirer Marguerite, his ailment comes less as a random tragedy than as a consequence of personal choices, the outcome of a life lived assuming that personal and artistic growth are separable. Ravel is represented on stage by two actors. His failing body sits idly as Edouard and Marguerite make plans with an insensitive surgeon and a fatuous maid for Ravel's brain operation; meanwhile, his still active but
