Jean-Phillipe Rameau (1683-1764). Jean-Phillipe Rameau nasceu em Dijon em 1683. Uma vez que só se viria a destacar já mais tarde na sua vida, não se sabe muito da vida de Rameau: sabe-se sim, que foi para Itália em 1701, e que até 1715 exerceu cargos de organista em Paris e Dijon. Em 1722 publica a sua importante obra "Traité de l'harmonie", na qual introduz aspectos teóricos muito inovadores no seu tempo, e em 1732 pública um tratado acerca do modo de acompanhar ao cravo ou ao órgão. Em 1733, e já com cinquenta anos, começa uma frutífera carreira operática, compondo "Hippolyte et Haricie", que no entanto não obteve grande sucesso. Apesar de tudo, Rameau comporia mais vinte óperas até ao final da sua vida, almejando rapidamente o sucesso e o reconhecimento do público. Foi no domínio da ópera que Rameau mais inovou. Esta inovação reside na experimentação de novos jogos harmónicos, de uma instrumentação nova e audaciosa e na introdução, por Rameau, de recitativos parecidos com os italianos, separando mais veementemente os recitativos (récit) das árias. Assim, devido ao seu génio, não admira que fosse aclamado como o sucessor de Lully como compositor de ópera francesa, em em 1745 fosse nomeado compositor de música de câmara da corte. Não será de esquecer que Rameau ainda inventou a "opera-comíque", um género que pretendia fazer frente à "opera buffa" italiana. Na música de Rameau encontra-se um sentido inovador fora do comum. Primeiro, deixa o mundo harmónico e melódico de Lully, e depois cria um novo colorido instrumental, sem no entanto lhe abandonar o estilo e o gosto, mantendo o ritmo e as formas. E estas mudanças tanto se constatam na ópera e música para cravo, como na música religiosa: tal com o em Lully, os seus "grand motets" mantêm o

Após, entrou numa escola jesuíta, e então passou um ano de estudos na Itália. Pode ter tocado violino em uma orquestra de teatro. Em 1702 foi indicado maître de musique da Catedral de Avignon, mas no mesmo ano mudou-se para a Catedral de Clermont. Em 1709 estava em Paris como organista do Colégio Jesuíta. Voltou a Dijon em 1709 como co-organista da igreja de Notre Dame, mas em 1713 já estava em Lyon, e em 1715 voltava a Clermont para um contrato de 29 anos como organista. Em 1722, entretanto, estava em Paris, onde deveria permanecer; havia deixado Clermont para supervisionar a publicação de seu Traité de l’Harmonie , um trabalho profundo e controverso, particularmente no que se refere à sua nova teoria, baseada em sua compreensão das propriedades físicas do som, e na relação do baixo para com a harmonia. O Traité lhe trouxe ampla notoriedade. Dit nam niet weg dat er nog heel wat gaande was op muzikaal gebied. Antonio Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) Antonio Vivaldi had een opleiding als muzikant en een opleiding theologie genoten. Aanvankelijk werd hij priester, maar door een chronische ziekte werd hij vrijgesteld van het opdragen van de mis, en kon hij zich volledig wijden aan de muziek. Omdat de muziek uit die tijd nooit veel langer dan twee of drie seizoenen op het programma bleef en veel muziek voor speciale gelegenheden geschreven werd, produceerden componisten gigantisch veel.
