Johann Joachim Quantz Life Photo Gallery Home Page Johann Joachim Quantz Life After the death of his father, a blacksmith, Quantz began his musical training under his uncle, a town musician in Merseburg. He studied string and wind instruments and also took lessons on the harpsichord. During this period he came to know the works of the major Baroque composers of the preceeding and present generations. Quantz moved to Dresden and became a member of the town band in 1716. After studying counterpoint the following year in Vienna, he next settled in Dresden as oboist for Augustus II, in the Polish chapel. He perceived little opportunity for advancement on the oboe and switched to flute during this time. His interest in composition began to grow, especially for works for the flute. MIDI FILE - Trio Sonata in C for flute and b.c. (4'16'') Here he had many opportunities to perform for the royalty of Europe. After a distinguished world tour, Quantz was offered a post as a member of the court Kapelle in Dresden. In 1740 he took a special position as composer and flute maker for Frederick, the king of Prussia, where he remained for the rest of his career.

Komponisten Johann Joachim Quantz Biographie Die Werke Photo Gallery Home Page Die Biographie von Johann Joachim Quantz Deutscher Komponist (besonders für die Flöte): Quantz war ursprünglich Kontrabassist und fand erst in seinem 30. Lebensjahr zur Flöte. Auf diesem Instrument wurde er einer der angesehensten Virtuosen seiner Zeit. Er führte einige wichtige mechanische Verbesserungen an der Flöte ein, indem er eine zweite Klappe hinzufügte und eine Vorrichtung erfand, mit der man die Flöte stimmen konnte. Nachdem Quantz in allen wichtigen Musikzentren Europas aufgetreten war, gab er 1728 eine Vorstellung vor Kronprinz Friedrich (dem späteren Preußenkönig) in Berlin und wurde danach dessen Flötenlehrer. Der König Friedrich II. holte Quantz dann nach Berlin und machte ihn zum Oberhofmusiker und Hofkomponisten. Die Werke von Johann Joachim Quantz Er hinterließ etwa 300 Konzerte für eine oder zwei Flöten und etwa 200 Flötenstücke, darunter Triosonaten. In 1741 he became chamber musician and teacher of the flute to Frederick the Great, for whom Quantz wrote more than 500 pieces, including flute sonatas and concertos.
