Folklore in the Music of Prokofiev
by Grant Gibbs
Sergei Prokofiev
Sergei Prokofiev was born in 1891, in what is now known as Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukraine. The Russian composer and pianist studied as a young man under former Russian composers such as Reinhold Moritysovick Gliere, and Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov (F and W, p.387). Then from 1918 to 1933 Prokofiev lived in Europe. This would be his home base from which he would tour much of the world including the USSR, Japan, and the United States. After he grew tired of the touring lifestyle, Prokofiev would return to his homeland of Russia. But, he would never be happy here because of the Soviet Government constantly condemning his music as having "modern tendencies" (F and W, P.387). Sergei Prokofiev would later die in 1953, but not before immortalizing himself through his many great works. Two of his famous works are located in the links below. If you would like to take a peek at these works, you could see why Prokofiev is considered so unique!
Peter and the Wolf
"Peter and the Wolf" is a story written primarily for children, but it's appeal has become universal. This story has the charm and appeal of all great fairy tales, which made it a perfect work for Sergei Prokofiev to create an orchestral narrative to lead the reader through the story. This is the story of a young boy named Peter, who wanders into an open meadow and meets a bird, duck , and a cat. When Peter's grandfather realizes he is playing in the meadow , he immediately goes to Peter and warns him of the danger that lurks in the meadows surroundings. The grandfather takes Peter home and tells him not to return to the meadow. But in the next scene, Peter sees his animal friends being attacked by a Wolf in the meadow. Peter goes to the assistance of his friends and they work together to capture the wolf. Next, Peter convinces the hunters in search of the Wolf to go along with him and take the Wolf to the zoo.

Prokofiev, Sergey (1891 - 1953)
Sergey Prokofiev, precocious as a child, entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1904, by which time he had already written a great deal of music. At the Conservatory he shocked the more conservative director, Glazunov, but learned much from an older fellow-student, the composer Myaskovsky. After the Revolution he was given permission to travel abroad and he remained intermittently out of Russia, in America and then in Paris, until his final return to Russia in 1936. At home, though in touch again with the root of his inspiration, he found himself out of favour with the authorities and in 1948 the subject of particular and direct censure. His death in 1953, on the same day as Stalin, deprived him of the enjoyment of the subsequent relaxation in musical censorship that then took place. In style Prokofiev is ironic, writing in a musical language that is often acerbic. He was a successful composer in a wide range of works. Sergej Prokofiev Works
Prokofiev wrote six operas including "The Love for Three Oranges", written in 1919 for Chicago, and "The Fiery Angel". His last opera, "War and Peace", is based on Tolstoy's great novel and was performed in its complete version only after his death. He wrote three ballets for Dyagilev, once rejected as undanceable; these include "Romeo and Juliet" and "Cinderella". Film scores by Prokofiev include "Alexander Nevsky" and "Ivan the Terrible" written for Eisenstein’s films. Music for the film Lieutenant Kijè, a fictional character, created by a clerical error and maintained in existence to the end, was written in 1933.
