d Moscow, 7 March 1953, aged sixty-one
He wrote his first music at the age of five and his first opera at nine. He was a pupil of Gliere before entering the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of thirteen, where he studied harmony and counterpoint with Liadov, orchestration with Rimsky-Korsakov and conducting with Tcherepnin, as well as piano. He graduated with the Rubinstein Prize in 1914. He travelled extensively over the next twenty years, visiting America and touring Western Europe as a pianist and conductor of his own works. By 1936 he had settled permanently back in Russia but his work fell foul of the Soviet authorities in 1948, and it was not until 1959 that his music was officially reinstated and approved in Russia. by Karen Monson It took Tchaikovsky to show Russian audiences that music for the ballet did not need to be of the mild, self-effacing ilk that had been the norm for centuries. But the two Russian composers who were to learn Tchaikovsky's lessons best, and who were to add their own brilliant manifestos to the provocative genre, both built their reputations outside of their native land. Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Prokofiev made their marks as collaborators for the dance while working in Western Europe with the great Diaghilev, his Ballet russes , and the master choreographers and scenic designers in that legendary entourage.

Prokofiev, Sergei Sergeyevich [syirg A A u vich pr O E ef] Pronunciation Key Prokofiev, Sergei Sergeyevich The Gambler The Love for Three Oranges (1921), after Carlo Gozzi; Betrothal in a Convent (1940; 1946), based on Richard Sheridan's Duenna; and War and Peace (1943; rev. version, 1952), after Leo Tolstoy. Other works are the ballets Chout (The Buffoon, Le Pas d'acier (1927), and Romeo and Juliet Peter and the Wolf (1936); and suites from the scores for the films Lieutenant Kije (1933) and Alexander Nevsky (1938). Prokofiev's early works are often harsh and strident, deliberately avoiding emotionalism. Later he wrote in a more simplified, popular style, although he never lost his individuality. He used sharp and vigorous rhythms, and he was a master of orchestration. His own virtuosity at the piano is reflected in the brilliance of his piano music. See his autobiography (tr. 1959); selected letters ed. by H. Robinson (1998); biographies by I. Nestyev (rev. ed. tr. 1960), V. Seroff (1968), C. Samuel (tr. 1971), and H. Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953) Prokofiev travelled to Japan, to the United States, and to the European capitals of London and Paris. These travels gave him opportunities to learn new ideas, but also to demonstrate his talents to new audiences. He met Stravinsky, and worked on a number of ideas for ballet material for Diaghilev. He eventually settled in the West and remained there for some 15 years where he relished the artistic freedom and stimulation, and he produced a number of major works during this time. Film music was in its formative years at this time, and Prokofiev was quick to realise its potential, even visiting Hollywood at one time. However after some visits to the USSR, he decided to return to his friends and home country. He therefore became subject to the same state-defined restrictions as Shostakovich and other artists. Like the younger composer he also stepped over the mark on occasion and was branded a "formalist" before apologies and conformist material re-established a secure position, though he was never able to fully express himself under these conditions. Ironically he died on the same day as Stalin. Prokofiev's music: Alexander Nevsky . Other selected works include the following:
    • War and Peace and The Love of Three Oranges - operas Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet - ballets, the latter is definitely worth a visit if the opportunity arises - you won't be disappointed
