Krzysztof Kieslowski - In Memoriam March 13, 1996, has brought the sad news - Krzysztof Kieslowski had passed away after a second heart attack. He did undergo a bypass surgery just two days earlier, on Monday. Kieslowski did have a heart condition and most likely his relentless filmmaking efforts have significantly contributed to it. He suffered the first heart attack in August last year. The heart surgery was to improve his chances for survival, but apparently came too late. Nevertheless, Kieslowski was working all the time. His last efforts concentrated on developing the latest script together with Krzysztof Piesiewicz entitled "Hell, Purgatory, Heaven". It was intended as another trilogy. Time will tell if we will see any of it either in print or on the screen. Kieslowski was also active in Film Production Unit "Tor"; his involvement there lasted over 20 years. Recently he was providing artistic advice to younger colleague, Pawel Lozinski, who was filming his debut under the title "The Cage" (Klatka). The news of Kieslowski's death hit the first pages of Polish newspapers only on Thursday. Polish television managed to show "The Double Life of Veronique" and one of the parts of "The Decalogue" on Wednesday night. On Thursday night a panel consisting of few critics and filmmakers, including Krzysztof Zanussi, reminisced on Kieslowski and his work. Short comments from his friends and closest collaborators, including Zbigniew Preisner, were also aired. The program was opened by Kieslowski's short "From the Point of View of Night Watchman" (Z punktu widzenia nocnego portiera". For most of the people interviewed for this program (as well as the newspapers) the news of Kieslowski's death is too fresh to make any sense. And it does not, since most of these people, like all of his fans have lost a friend, a master and a moral guide. This void will remain unfilled.

THE DECALOGUE The Music of Zbigniew Preisner Zbigniew Preisner was an unknown composer in 1988 when he agreed to write the scores for all ten episodes of Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue . The project was a challenge because the score for each episode was slightly different, yet the music needed to work as a whole. Preisner's success on this project brought him widespread acclaim and propelled his career into the international arena. Considering his world-wide reputation, it comes as a surprise that Preisner never formally studied music. Born in 1955 in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, he entered the history and philosophy department at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow where he studied art history. He taught himself music by buying records and then deconstructing the compositions, rewriting bits and pieces to compliment or enhance the original. To hone his skills, he tried out his original compositions by playing with students enrolled at Krakow's Academy of Music. Around 1977-78, he discovered the cabaret scene in Krakow and began composing music for the famous Piwnica pod Baranami (Cellar Under the Ram). Shortly thereafter, a young Polish film director named Antoni Krauze asked him to write an original score for his film
