For many years Preisner enjoyed a close collaboration with the director Krzysztof Kieslowski and his script-writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz. His scores for Kieslowski's films - DEKALOG, THE DOUBLE LIFE OF VERONIQUE, THREE COLOURS BLUE, THREE COLOURS WHITE and THREE COLOURS RED - have brought him international acclaim. Other feature films which he has scored include Hector Babenco's AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD, Louis Malle's DAMAGE, Luis Mandoki's WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN, Agnieska Holland's THE SECRET GARDEN and Charles Sturridge's FAIRYTALE: A TRUE STORY. Among many recent awards and citations Preisner received the Silver Bear from the Berlin Film Festival in 1997, two Cesars from the French Film Academy - one in 1996 fro Jean Becker's ELISA and one in 1995 for THREE COLOURS RED - and three consecutive citations as the year's most outstanding composer of film music in The Los Angeles Critics Association awards of 1991, 1992 and 1993. Preisner is a member of the French Film Academy and in 1992 he received the Award of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for outstanding achievements in the presentation of Polish Culture abroad. REQUIEM FOR MY FRIEND is Preisner's first large-scale work specially written for recording and live performance.

He studied history and philosophy at Krakow , and never received formal lessons in music , instead teaching himself by copying down parts from recordss His music for Kieslowski, which is his best known work, is sometimes credited to a Dutch composer by the name of Van den Budenmayer . This is a pseudonym for Preisner himself, however. Although Preisner is most closely associated with Kieslowski, he has written for other directors, winning a César in 1996 for his work on Jean Becker's Elisa . He has won a number of other awards, including another César in 1994 for Three Colors: Red , and the Silver Bear from the Berlin Film Festival in 1997 for The Island on Bird Street Joni Mitchell's symphonic-rock CD " Travelogue ," released in 2002, includes a version of Preisner's "Song For The Unification of Europe" written for the motion picture Three Colors: Blue In 1998

ZBIGNIEW PREISNER In Concert: Requiem For My Friend Interview by Jonathan Broxton and James Southall Zbigniew Preisner has been one of Poland's leading film music composers for over 20 years, and started writing for documentaries and various short films as early as 1978. His first full-length feature was Prognoza Pogody (The Weather Forecast) for director Antoni Krauze in 1982, a score of which he is still very fond ("that was the kind of music I like the most"). In total, he has written music for over fifty European films during the 1980s alone. Preisner's first Hollywood movie was The Secret Garden in 1993. It was a brave decision to ask him to score the family film, since virtually of all his work previously had been for very serious movies, but this was not something he was too worried about. "It was something that came about by accident. Anyway, I'm not sure you could classify it as children's music, because it wasn't really a children's film - it was something anyone could enjoy. You just have to follow the director - in this case Agnieszka Holland, who'd done Olivier Olivier and Europa Europa and others with me. Ultimately, I am a film music composer and I must follow filmmakers. I wouldn't be good at comedy, and perhaps not at children's music - who knows? I like serious music. I am serious. Louis Malle was serious. Krzysztof Kieslowski was serious."
