Michael Praetorius Born: February 15, 1571, , Germany. Died: His real name was Michael Schultheiß Residenz sic From 1613-1616, Praetorius was in Dresden, at the court of the Organisator (organizer). He was not only a composer, but also a musicologist. From 1605 to 1610, he edited Musae Sioniae , a collection of 1244 arrangements of songs and hymns in 9 volumes. MICHAEL PRAETORIUS (?1571-1621) Music from Terpischore Excerpts from the sleeve notes Furthermore, Praetorius printed a number of pieces among his section of courantes that come from England rather than France. Nos 151, 152, 154 and 123 are settings of the English popular tunes 'Wilson's Wild', 'Light of Love', 'Grimstock' and 'Packington's Pound', while nos 157 and 158 are versions of a lute piece by John Dowland and a song by Thomas Campion respectively. Praetorius presumably obtained these pieces from Emeraud and thought they were French, but Emeraud probably found them in the repertory of popular tunes used by the travelling groups of English actors and musicians that toured Germany in the early seventeenth century; their performances included 'jigs' or short popular dramas set to popular tunes of this sort. Februar 1571 in Kreuzburg (Thüringen) geboren und starb am 15. Februar 1621 in Wolfenbüttel. Praetorius hatte Kontakt mit anderen Großen seiner Zeit wie Hans Leo Haßler, Samuel Scheidt und Heinrich Schütz. Er war Sohn eines Predigers, studierte in Frankfurt an der Oder und wurde Kammersekretär und Magdeburgischer Hofkapellmeister in Wolfenbüttel. Hauptwerke: Michael Praetorius hinterließ ein Werk, das an Umfang das vieler anderer Komponisten bei weitem übertrifft, allein die neun Bände "Musae Sioniae", die er zwischen 1605 und 1610 herausgab, enthalten über 1200 Gesänge. Er schrieb Motetten im venezianischen Stil, geistliche Konzerte, Bicinien, Psalme, weltliche Lieder, Orgelsätze und Tänze und geistliche Lieder, darunter das berühmte "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen". Theoretische Schriften: "Syntagma musicum" (1615-1620) in drei Bänden, darunter "Organographia, 1618" in welchem er alle Instrumente der damaligen Zeit beschreibt. MICHAEL PRAETORIUS PRAETORIUS, MICHAEL The chief value of this very remarkable work lies in the information it gives concerning the condition of instrumental music in the early years of the 17th century. The plates include excellent representations of all the musical instruments in use at the time they were published, together with many forms even then treated on.ly as antique curiosities. The work thus throws a light upon. the earlier forms of instrumental music which to the historian is invaluable. In fact, without the information bequeathed to us by Praetorius it would be impossible to reconstruct in theory the orchestra of the earlier half of the I 7th century, during which the opera and the oratorio both sprang into existence, or even to understand the descriptions left us by other less careful writers.
