Poulenc, Francis (1899 - 1963)
The French composer Francis Poulenc only undertook formal musical training with Charles Koechlin in 1921, by which time he had already become identified with Les Six, the six French composers of the circle of Jean Cocteau, including Honegger, Auric and Milhaud. Initially apparently light-weight in style, the death of a close friend in 1935 brought a new depth to his work, at the same time as the start of a long collaboration with the singer Pierre Bernac. Stage Works Orchestral Music Choral and Vocal Music Recommended Recording

Chamber Music French composers of the present century have shown a particular deftness in the handling of woodwind instruments. This ability is exemplified in Poulenc's sonatas for flute, for clarinet and for oboe and piano, in addition to an attractive Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano. Recommended Recording Violin Sonata

Poulenc's Stabat Mater
Francis Poulenc composed his Stabat Mater , for soprano, mixed chorus and orchestra, during 1950 and 1951. The first performance took place at the Strasbourg Festival on April 22, 1951. The composition, in the form of a "grand motet," is a setting of a thirteenth-century hymn in Latin attributed to Jacopone da Todi. The hymn is about the reaction of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the crucifixion of her son Jesus. "Stabat Mater" means "the mother was standing." The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1980) describes Poulenc's Stabat Mater as "a powerful and profoundly moving work." Poulenc was moved to write the work by the death of a friend, Christian Bérard, a painter and set designer. FRANCIS POULENC (20TH CENTURY COMPOSERS SERIES) , a biography of Francis Poulenc by Benjamin Ivry, is available from Barnes and Noble. Poulenc's Stabat Mater is in twelve movements: 1. Stabat mater dolorosa ( Très calme
2. Cujus animam gementem ( Allegro moltoTrès violent
3. O quam tristis ( Très lent

Scene 1 The library in the house of Marquis de la Force, Paris; April 1789. The Chevalier rushes in, concerned about his sister Blanche's safety as her carriage has been stopped by a protesting mob. The Marquis, who has been resting, recalls the horror he and his wife faced in a similar situation. Unfortunately, his wife was pregnant with Blanche at the time and died giving birth to her in that carriage. The Chevalier is extremely worried because Blanche is rather high strung and impressionable. Blanche finally appears, seemingly fine, and says she's tired and will go to bed. A scream is heard as Blanche thinks she's seen a terrifying shadow on her wall. She asks her father's permission to join the Carmelite convent as she feels she must find salvation. Scene 2 The parlor of the Carmelite convent.

Francis Poulenc Life Works Best Work s and Operas ... Home Page Francis Poulenc Life After receiving a classical education, the French composer Francis Poulenc studied with Ricardo Vines who introduced him to Satie and Auric. During the First World War he worked as a typist for the Admiralty in Paris and became one of the six French composers (with including Honegger Auric Tailleferre Durey and Milhaud ), known as Les Six, who rejected romaticism and impressionism. After the war he studied under Charles Koechlin Initially light-hearted and ironic in style, the death of a close friend in 1935 brought a new depth to his work. The songs written after 1935, when he began accompanying the French baritone Pierre Bernac, are among his best works. Francis Poulenc Works Poulenc won considerable success with his comic opera Les Mamelles de Tirèsias, with a text by Apollinaire, written in 1944 and staged in Paris in 1947. The tragic opera Dialogue des Carmèlites, with a libretto by Georges Bernanos dealing with the execution of Carmelite nuns during the French Revolution and based on Gertrud von le Fort's novel Die Letzte am Schafott (The Last on the Scaffold), has entered international repertoire. Other stage works, in addition to a number of scores of incidental music and film music, include the ballet Les Biches, first staged in Monte Carlo in 1924.

    Francis Poulenc - (Paris, 7 janvier 1899 - 30 janvier 1963)

Poulenc, Francis (1899-1963) One of the first openly gay composers, Francis Poulenc wrote concerti, chamber music, and operas. His diverse compositions are characterized by bright colors, strong rhythms, and novel harmonies. Although his early music is light, he ultimately became one of the most thoughtful composers of serious music in the twentieth century. Sponsor Message.
At the death of his parents, Poulenc inherited Noizay, a country estate near his grandparents' home, which would be an important retreat for him as he gained fame. It was also the source of several men in his life, including his second lover, the bisexual Raymond Destouches, a chauffeur who was the dedicatee of the surrealistic opera (1944) and the World War II Resistance cantata Figure humaine Conscripted into the military in 1918, he continued to compose and, in 1920, became a member of a group of young composers dubbed "Les Six"; the others were Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, Auric, Germaine Tailleferre, and Louis Durey.
