Francis Poulenc
Poulenc had his first major successes as an 18-year-old composer without a single composition lesson. Despite some study, he remained largely self-taught. In fact, his music is so individual, it's remained largely self-taught. In fact, his music is so individual, it's difficult to imagine what anyone could have taught him. The music is eminently tunefulhis major strength. I regard him as a melodist fit to keep company with Franz Schubert and Wolfgang Mozart Poulenc behaved like a sophisticated eccentric (he once chatted up a stupefied Cannes bartender about an ingenious harmonic progression he managed to pull off that morning), and the eccentricity not surprisingly showed up in his music. Many have called attention to his split artistic personality, "part monk, part guttersnipe," but really he has many more sides. Like most French composers of his generation, he fell under the influences of Stravinsky and Satie. Yet he doesn't imitate either. You can identify a Poulenc composition immediately with its bright colors, strong, clear rhythms, and gorgeous and novel diatonic harmonies. He is warmer and less intellectual than Stravinsky, more passionate and musically more refined than Satie. In the Twenties, Poulenc was part of Les Six, an informal confederation of French composers who wanted to divorce both Impressionism and Germanicism from French music and create an amalgam from

For centuries Parisians have taken it for granted that Paris is the centre of the civilised world. The French provinces have their points, no doubt (for one thing, they provide relief from the August heat of the capital), but in cultural matters they have never had any real influence. The provincials for their part have always regarded Paris with a somewhat wary disdain: the city, as the centre of political power, could never be ignored, but its citizens did tend to be blown about by every wind of fashion and to be consumed by a sense of their own importance.
When Francis Poulenc was born in Paris on 7 January 1899, he inherited a share of both viewpoints. His mother, born Jenny Royer, came from a long line of Parisian craftsmen and brought with a strain of freethinking independence and a deep love of the arts. Poulenc’s father Emile, on the other hand, from the Aveyron district, between Toulouse and the Massif Central, was a devout Roman Catholic. This dichotomy can be seen in their son on many levels and it was one he never perhaps completely reconciled. We might even suggest that the friction between the two attitudes was responsible for generating some of his compositional energy.
His mother was a talented amateur pianist and musical soir©es were a regular occurrence. The young Francis preferred listening to the music from under the grand piano, except when it came to the Faur© First Violin Sonata, when he would take refuge in his bedroom. His mother was his first piano teacher and his involvement with music was to remain that of an amateur for some years. He came to love Schubert’s Die Winterreise, was impressed by the early Stravinsky ballets and even had a go at the Three Piano Pieces by Sch¶nberg, but the decisive encounter was with a nickeloden in a Paris arcade, and with the eminent pianist Eduard Risler playing the ‘Idylle’ from Chabrier’s Dix Pi¨ces pittoresques. From that moment the 14-year-old Poulenc knew he was going to be a composer.

Francis Poulenc Francis Poulenc was born in Paris, France on January 7, 1899. Poulenc's father was Emile Poulenc who became one of the directors of the pharmaceutical firm Rhone-Poulenc. Never one to be without money, Poulenc's composing was often viewed as more of a hobby than a necessity. Plus the fact that Poulenc never studied at the famed Paris Conservatoire or any other musical institution made it difficult for Poulenc to be accepted by his peers. Poulenc's final opera was a one act tragedy entitled La Voix Humaine (The Human Voice) featuring a young elegant woman who has been deserted by her lover. This opera was premiered at the Paris Opera-Comique on February 6, 1959. In addition to his three operas, Poulenc composed a number of concerti for organ, harpsichords and piano as well as masses, chamber music with only a few orchestral works including Les Biches and Model Animals. Poulenc died on January 30, 1963 in Paris. back to top

Francis Poulenc
Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc January 7 January 30 ) was a French composer Poulenc was born in Paris . His mother, an amateur pianist, taught him to play, and music formed a part of family life. As a young man, in he was fulfilling his National Military Service but still managed to create the composition of three miniatures. At one time, the best known of all Poulenc's music was the three Mouvements perpétuels of Influenced by Igor Stravinsky as well as Maurice Chevalier and the French vaudeville , after the War, Poulenc joined a circle of young composers gathered around Erik Satie and Jean Cocteau whose followers opposed Impressionism , advocating instead simplicity and clarity and espousing a particularly flippant form of anti- Romanticism This talented and innovative group believed emotions should be more restrained than they had been in late 19th century Romantic music, although the Satie set readily made exceptions to the rule for the purposes of satire. In , the critic Henri Collet dubbed Satie’s group as Les Six The other members of " Les Six " were: Poulenc used some of the style from Les Six to build his own musical career. He embraced the

Remembering Francis Poulenc on the 100th Anniversary of his birth
Satie's influence and the composer's intrinsic mistrust of intellectual theorizing soon led him to drift into the circle of defiant young musicians who were thumbing their noses at the musical establishment. Six of them were soon to form a loose association under the name "Les Six" Poulenc, Honegger, Milhaud, Auric, Durey and Tailleferre. What they shared was not a common musical style, but a love of many things that made "serious" music lovers and post-Wagnerians of all stripes frown with disdain: circuses, dance-hall music, popular tunes, irony, humor. - Roger Clement for Unitel
