The A - Z of Composers Harry Partch Harry Partch was born in Oakland, California as son of missionary parents on 24 June 1901. Largely self-taught, he enhanced his skills as instrument maker and developed during the 1920s and 1930s his own theory of music. Taking his authority from the Greeks, he argued for music as a 'corporeal' rather than an intellectual art. He used the natural intervals of just intonation and built his own percussion and wind instruments for this purpose in a 43-note scale. His own major works were dramatic, their drama enhanced by the striking presence of his instruments. Largely ignored by standard musical institutions, he criticised concert traditions, the roles of performer and composer, the role of music in society, the twelve-tone equal-temperament scale and the concept of pure or abstract music. To explain his ideas, he wrote "Genesis of a music". Between 1930 and 1972, Partch, who held no teaching appointments, but had research posts at the universities of Wisconsin, Illinois, and California, created music dramas, dance theatre, vocal music and chamber music - mostly performed on instruments he built himself.

North Platte, Nebras-katte It's extraordinary to discover that Harry Partch 's U.S.Highball dates from the same era of American classics such as Copland's Appalachian Spring and Bernstein's On The Town. Partch's work is a kind of cousin to Jack Kerouac's much-lauded On The Road novel, subtitled as a musical account of Slim's transcontinental Hobo trip. Originally Slim represented Partch himself, who undertook this life-changing journey from California to meet an acquaintance in Chicago, but now Slim stands for the escapee in all of us. He traverses the railroad from Carmel California with only $3.50 for the ride, moving through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and more, finding time to chat to fellow hobos, ruminate on his lack of money and hygiene, or to make nonsense rhymes on the place names as the boredom becomes extreme. When translated to music all this makes for an engaging listen, with Ben Johnston's arrangement of the string quartet accompaniment a success. Partch's microtonal style must have been very difficult to bring off for vocalist

THE OUTSIDER: HARRY PARTCH 15 May 12.30am-1.30am 2002 A rugged individualist, American composer Harry Partch went to extraordinary lengths to distance himself from both the musical world and society. Partch believed that the 12 tone octave used in Western music for centuries was simply wrong. He developed his own scale, which included 43 notes. To play his music, he built his own instruments, which have a beautiful sculptural quality of their own. He developed a new concept of music theatre which has influenced many other composers and musicians, including Philip Glass, Tom Waits and Gavin Bryars. During the great depression Partch abandoned music to become a hobo. For 10 years he rode freight trains across America, keeping notebooks which became the source of later compositions. He remained a nomad until his death in 1974. The documentary includes interviews with Philip Glass, Gavin Bryars and Partch biographer Bob Gilmore.

The Quality of Vitality: Music by Harry Partch Part 1 Perhaps the most common scenario of the modern creative composer/musician is that of the artist, independent from academic, commercial, or public support, producing and releasing on vinyl (with limited personal finances) his/her own music. This is done in spite of apathy from the general populace. While such a scenario is probably all too agonizingly familiar to persons reading an alternative magazine such as this, I feel inclined to present the following quote by Harry Partch from his book GENESIS OF A MUSIC to give a bit of perspective: "The point is…whether in our schools of serious music we shall confine ourselves to finer and still finer degrees of perfection in the "interpretation" of past treasures, whether we shall go on devouring or unconsciously absorbing vibrating frankfurters (Partch's accurate description of radio) to the point of melomaniacal satiety at which our appetite vanishes, or whether some few of us will chuck the music school, turn off the radio, and go into the kitchen and cook ourselves a nourishing meal." As it turns out, what Partch himself cooked up was not a mere nourishing meal, but a genuine feast! The item that puts this in perspective is that the statement was first published in 1949, a full two and a half decades before any significant number of other artists realized similar philosophies independently, creating the current alternative music boom.
