Palestrina , Giovanni Pierluigi da (1525, Palestrina - 1594, Rom) Som det umiddelbart fremgår af ovenstående, hed komponisten oprindelig Giovanni Pierluigi, men antog sin fødebys navn som tilnavn. Med Palestrina står vi ved et af musikhistoriens højdepunkter, idet han repræsenterer fuldendelsen af en stilart og en kompositionsteknik, som dels har skabt nogle af musiklitteraturens smukkeste og mest storslåede mesterværker, og dels har haft en betydning for musikkens senere udvikling, som ikke mange komponister vil kunne bryste sig af. Som dreng var Palestrina medlem af drengekoret i kirken St. Maria Maggiore i Rom. Som 19-årig blev han korleder og organist i sin fødeby. I 1551 vendte han tilbage til Rom som sanglærer og dirigent for drengekoret ved Capella Julia i Peterskirken, og i 1555 blev han pavelig kapelsanger i det sixtinske kapel. På grund af sit ægteskab, som var uforeneligt med hans kirkelige pligter, blev han imidlertid afskediget, men opnåede dog i 1571 genansættelse i stillingen. Palestrina var gift to gange, anden gang med en rig pelshandlerenke, hvis formue tillod ham at bekoste udgivelsen af sine kompositioner. In this third edition the original five Masses of the first edition (1554) are supplemented by two further Masses, the Sine Nomine, for six voices, which had first appeared in Palestrina's Missarum liber quintus (Rome 1590), and the Requiem Mass, Missa pro defunctis, for five voices, which appears here for the first time. Palestrina wrote this just three years before his death and perhaps intended it for his own funeral. Palestrina (1525-94), has long been celebrated as the greatest composer of the Italian High Renaissance. Gustave Reese writes that "although Palestrina was a good composer of madrigals and a superior one of motets, it is in his Masses that he particularly excels". He issued his First Book of Masses in 1554 when he was 29 years old; it was the first published collection of Masses by a native Italian composer. In the first and second editions the voices are printed together in choirbook-style; in this and subsequent editions the various voices are printed separately as part-books. Contemporary editions of Palestrina's works are all very rare.

All were dismissed with a small pension, in spite of the understanding that these singers were engaged for life.
