However, sometimes that's not what creating music is all about. Sometimes creating music is about being strapped into a harness and lowered into an empty two million gallon, 186-foot diameter water cistern. This is precisely what experimental artists Pauline Oliveros Stuart Dempster , and Panaiotis did one foggy morning in October of 1988. The result

Deep Listening
Composer, accordionist, educator, Pauline Oliveros talks about landscapes, soundscapes, the history of ambient music and the future of the recital hall.
By Marc Weidenbaum
Composer, accordionist, educator, Pauline Oliveros has done more to humanize technology than virtually any other living musician in the classical tradition. Whereas much of the world, caught up in this age of accelerated culture, accepts that electronic art must be hyperkinetic by nature, Oliveros finds nothing short of solace in the machine. Despite its technological inception, Oliveros' work as composer and performer is best heard alongside the music of contemporary composer-mystics, such as Arvo Part. Part's generally ethereal work is a descendant of early European polyphony, of composers such as Thomas Tallis and Palestrina, who composed with the innate resonance of the Church sanctum in mind. And even though Oliveros has left the Church far behind, she similarly composes spiritual music with a keen sense of place. Her longtime ensemble, the Deep Listening Band, records deeply felt sonic picturesques; these highly reverberent soundscapes reveal not only the musicians' simpatico, but their artful facility with recording equipment. Her work with the Expanded Instrument System helps suggest the recital hall as a living instrument unto itself. And as Oliveros explains below, her fondest performance experiences occur outside of traditional venues (preferably outside literally), where the audience and musicians alike contribute to the definition of the site as a place for musicmaking.

The Roots of the Moment
(book with CD) Back to: Division of Composition Pauline Oliveros Professor of Composition In March 1999, professor of composition Pauline Oliveros received the SEAMUS99 Award for Lifetime Achievement . (SEAMUS is the acronym for the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States, and recipients are recognized for quality and artistic production.) When Oliveros was unable to accept the award in person because she was recording in the King's Tomb in the Great Pryamid, Oliveros asked her former student Brenda Hutchinson to accept the award in her absence. On April 14, Hutchinson presented the award to Oliveros at Oberlin, when, as guest artist, she worked with Composition Seminar students who performed her piece, How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall? (for five pianos and DC players).

OLIVEROS, PAULINE Alien Bog/Beautiful Soop (Pogus) cd

Two beautiful and intense minimal electronic compostions from 1967 and 1966 respectively.
OLIVEROS, PAULINE Crone Music (Lovely Music) cd "Crone Music" is a 1989 piece composed by Oliveros for her expanded accordion. The recognizable chords of the accordion breathing slowly dissolve by means of four digital delay processors which generate a wide array of electronic drones. The piece was commissioned for a experimental theater production of Shakepeare's "Lear." OLIVEROS, PAULINE

Pauline Oliveros, composer, performer and humanitarian is an important pioneer in American Music. Acclaimed internationally for four decades she has explored sound‹forging new ground for herself and others. Through improvisation, electronic music, ritual, teaching and meditation she has created a body of work with great breadth of vision. "On some level, music, sound, consciousness and religion are all one, and she would seem to be very close to that level." John Rockwell.
Oliveros has been honored with awards and grants and her music has been played throughout the world. Whether performing at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., or an underground cavern Oliveros' commitment to interaction with the moment is unchanged. Through DEEP LISTENING (TM) and earlier Sonic Meditations Oliveros introduced the concept of incorporating all environmental sounds into musical performance. To make a pleasurable experience of this requires focused concentration, skilled musicianship and strong improvisational skills, which are the hallmarks of Oliveros' form. In performance Oliveros uses an expanded accordion. The expressive possibilities are increased by an electronic system, devised by Oliveros to alter sounds, bend pitches and explore the individual characteristics of each room.

The first misnomer here is the "Live!" part because, although certainly recorded at a live performance, this collaboration between the Buenos Aires troop and the denizen of Deep Listening was heavily processed in post-production. The end result is a fog of reverb and delay that nearly washes everything away.
While titles like "The Invisible Flag Points to the Sun" and "Cosmother Fell Asleep Inside a Galaxy-Cake" sound like long-lost Syd Barrett tunes, these performances would confound even the Crazy Diamond. Hard to tell if this would have been riveting stuff live (again, the post-production machinations all but equalize any sound, including audience clapping) but it is clear that a certain, weighty ambience was achieved. As a recorded listening experience, it's neither riveting nor annoying, neither provocative nor debilitating. To quote Robert Zimmerman, it's "nothing really, nothing to turn off".
Goodbye 20th Century Gordura Vegetal Hidrogenada , also known as the "dematerialized" CD, which everyone who has ever lived (or who has yet to live) owns. So, in a way, the whole non-ness of the entire album is consistent with all things Reynols.

Pauline Oliveros on Press The Button 5/17/99
Episode 104
Parting Shot Mix (Up or Down) Trio
Cory Archangel, Sam Harmon, Every Man, Pauline Oliveros, Rob Reich
The day was stressful for the Press The Button staff, who have grown accustomed to the idiom "prepare for the worst to hope for the best." When they used to depend on cassette decks working, they would die on them. When they counted on phone callers to steal the show for them after a previous week of over 100 unique callers, the phone would be ripped out of the wall, or the city decided to sleep in that night. When they counted on guests to arrive, they would either forget, come late, or get lost looking for the station. Since this is the case, the button pressers have religiously prepared for each show as though they would be completely alone for the show's duration and that no one will call the entire night.
Every Man and Sam prepared to leave, and as they looked back, everyone looked at them with a stare that said "you're all going to die miserably!"
