Pauline Oliveros
Pauline Oliveros (born 1932 in Houston, Texas ) is an accordionist and composer who currently resides in Kingston, New York. Her instrument is tuned in just intonation and she often includes it in her meditative improvisational music. Here music is not meditative in the sense that it is intended for listening to while meditating, rather each piece is a form of meditation , such as her aptly titled Sonic Meditations . The first director of the Tape Music Center at Mills College, she often includes an electronic system she had designed, the Expanded Instrument System , in her performances and recordings. A feminist and lesbian , Oliveros coined the term "Deep Listening®", which she then applied to her group The Deep Listening Band and to the Deep Listening program of The Pauline Oliveros Foundation, which she founded. The Deep Listening Band, which includes Panatois and Stuart Dempster, specializes in performing and recording in resonant or reverberant spaces such as cathedrals and huge underground cisterns. They have collaborated with Ellen Fullman and her Long String Instrument.

Gradually allow your breathing to become audible. Then gradually introduce your voice. Allow your vocal cords to vibrate in any mode which occurs naturally. Allow the intensity of the vibrations to increase very slowly. Continue as long as possible, naturally, and until all others are quiet, always observing your own breath cycle. Variation: translate voice to an instrument." Teach Yourself To Fly (dedicated to Amelia Earhart) Teach Yourself To Fly , the first of Pauline Oliveros's many "Sonic Meditations" shows just what it is that sets Oliveros apart from dozens of superficially related American composers. The Sonic Meditations were largely developed in the early 70s, and explored many times in real musical situations before ever being written down. Some are simpler than others, such as Re Cognition , which reads only: "Listen to a sound until you no longer recognise it" It's easy to see them as relating to other radical compositions of the period. Oliveros acknowledges the influence of La Monte Young's

Pauline Oliveros, professor of composition, has devoted her life to creating music and helping others create music. Presently based in Kingston, N.Y., she is president of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation, Inc., a non-profit program for the arts that she founded in 1985 to support the creation of new works in the arts. She composes and performs for a variety of ensembles. By normal standards, Pauline Oliveros - professor of composition, composer, performer, humanitarian - has had a remarkable month. But then, Oliveros doesn't follow any pattern for "normal standards."
