Ockeghem was born in the French-speaking province of Hainaut, in the town of Saint-Ghislain, according to recent definitive research. It had at one time been surmised that he was Flemish, but in any event, all of modern Belgium was then within the Duchy of Burgundy. Bei seinem Tod wurde er von den angesehensten Musikern der Zeit, die seine Schüler gewesen waren, in Werken betrauert (am berühmtesten die Lamentation von Josquin Desprez ); auch Erasmus von Rotterdam verfaßte ein Gedicht auf das Ableben des "guten Vaters" Ockeghem. Erstaunlich war daher, daß seine Musik binnen kurzer Frist fast vergessen war. Der Grund dafür war, daß Ockeghems Werk trotz zukunftsträchtiger Andeutungen noch das gotische Mittelalter verkörperte, während seine Schüler - voran Josquin - schon der Renaissance angehörten. Diese Stellung an der Grenze einer Musikepoche führte zur Verkennung seiner Kunst als bloßer Künstelei. Tatsächlich aber bedeutete Ockeghem die höchste Vollendung der niederländischen Polyphonie.
