Johannes Ockeghem
(c.1410 - 1497)
Ockeghem was one of the most respected composers of the fifteenth century, and along with Guillaume Dufay Josquin Des Prez , one of the most influential composers of the early Renaissance. Ockeghem was probably born in the current Belgium, in what was then the Duchy of Burgundy - estimates for the year of his birth vary from 1400 to c.1430, but written sources from the period indicate that he was a very old man by the time of his death in 1497. He was premier chaplain to three kings of France, as well as holding the prestigious position of treasurer at the great cathedral and monastery of St. Martin de Tours. During his lifetime, Ockeghem was known for his personal refinement and fine bass voice. After his death, a famous poem by Guillaume Cretin (set to music by Josquin Desprez) praised his character, skill, and influence. He was long identified as one of the fathers of Renaissance music, his influence finally fading only years after his death. Todd McComb Classical Net Resources: Additional Information:

Johannes Ockeghem
Johannes Ockeghem (1420-96) was the most important composer of his generation in the Flemish school that dominated Renaissance music. Possibly a pupil of the eminent composer Gilles Binchois (1400-1460), Ockeghem served as composer and choirmaster to three French kings: Charles VII, Louis XI, and Charles VIII. At his death, a Déploration (lament) was composed by his pupil (according to tradition), the French composer Josquin Desprez, and a lament by the philosopher Erasmus was set to music by the French composer Johannes Lupi (c. 1506-39). Ockeghem's masses, motets, and chansons (secular part-songs) show great skill at counterpoint based on melodic imitation.

(c.1425 - 1497)
Franco-Flemish composer. Ockeghem was born in the village of St. Ghislain (near Mons, Belgium) in the diocese of Cambrai, but his date of birth is unknown. Long ago FÈtis thought he was born around 1430, assuming that he was a choirboy in Antwerp in 1443; Plamenac suggested 1425, then later agreed with Riemann and Van den Borren, who picked 1420; Leeman Perkins wrote in 1980 that he must have been born closer to 1410, since he was thought to have lived about 90 or 100 years. It is unknown where got his training as a musician. Lack of any documentary evidence is only compensated for by two compositions in which Ockeghem refers to the composer Gilles de Binche (Binchois), for more than 30 years a distinguished member of the Burgundian court chapel of Duke Philip the Good. Shortly after Binchois' death in 1460, Ockeghem composed a lament whose text suggests personal acquaintance with Binchois. Presumably earlier is Ockeghem's polyphonic mass setting based on the Tenor of one of Binchois' most famous chansons: De plus en plus se renouvelle.

Johannes Ockeghem
Ockeghem (with glasses) Johannes Ockeghem (c. 1410- c.1497) was the leading composer of the Second Dutch School . Ockeghem is considered the most important composer between Dufay and Josquin Des Prez Although often thought to be Flemish, Ockeghem was born in Saint-Ghislain , in the provence of Hainaut (now part of modern Belgium ), part of the Duchy of Burgundy . Like many composers in this period, he started his musical career as chorister: in his case, in the Notre Dame in Antwerp . Around 1452 he moved to Paris where he served as maestro di cappella to the French court, as well as becoming treasurer of the St. Martin cathedral in Tours Very few of his works have survived: some 14 masses, 10 motets , some 25 chansons , and a single requiem . This Missa pro Defunctis is the earliest surviving example of a polyphonic requiem mass. A strong influence on Josquin Des Prez , Ockeghem was famous throughout Europe for his expressive music and his technical mastery. His technical prowess is demonstrated most clearly in the astonishing Missa Prolationem , composed entirely in canonical style, and his no less astonishing 36(!) part canon

Ockeghem was one of the most respected composers of the fifteenth century, and along with Guillaume Dufay Josquin Desprez , one of the most influential composers of the early Renaissance. Ockeghem was born in the French-speaking province of Hainaut, in the town of Saint-Ghislain, according to recent definitive research. It had at one time been surmised that he was Flemish, but in any event, all of modern Belgium was then within the Duchy of Burgundy. Estimates for the year of his birth vary considerably from 1400 to c.1430, but written sources from the period indicate that he was a very old man by the time of his death in 1497. Ockeghem's surviving musical output is relatively small, comprising a mere handful of motets, several masses, and a couple of dozen secular chansons. His style is marked by a careful handling of vocal ranges in a primarily four-voice texture, and an emphasis on complex and expressive bass lines. This emphasis on lower textures opened up a new world of structural possibilities for Renaissance composers, and Ockeghem's compositions exploit these potentials in a variety of ways.
