Klavierwerke von Georges Antheil
und Conlon Nancarrow von Herbert Henck Nachstehender Text wurde für das Booklet der CD
Piano Music , Georges Antheil, Conlon Nancarrow – Herbert Henck, Piano

Conlon Nancarrow b. Texarkana/Arkansas 27.10.1912 d. Mexico City 10.8.97 Nancarrow's compositions for player-piano, combining the most stunning rhythmic intricacies with popular styles such as blues and flamenco, are amongst the most complex musical works to have emerged this century. Though looking back to the Stravinsky transcriptions for mechanical piano, they also break fresh ground in developing the relationship between music and machines. CLICK HERE FOR HELP ON ABBREVIATIONS

To Mr Groves
The second string quartet remains uncompleted, and the recording of the third by Arditti String Quartet was avairable in Gramavision R2 79440 (out of print?).
Only for the Nancarrow Enthusiast This CD contains a couple of Nancarrow's studies not included in the five-volume set on the Wergo label. It contains the Prelude and Blues for Piano, the former in a player piano version, the latter for an interesting contraption created by a composer named Trimpin. This instrument is like a computerized player-marimba, and it is also featured in duet with the player piano on Contraption No. 1. Other tracks include a player piano arrangements of the unplayable Sonatina, and of the String Quartet. The last eight tracks are excerpts from an interview with Charles Amirkhanian. Overall, I think this disk is only worthwhile for the Nancarrow enthusiast. I don't know why the player piano version of the String Quartet No. 1 is included; it has no advantage over the string version. I would have preferred that this record included more of the hard-to-find instrumental music by this composer, such as the second and third string quartets.

Born: 27 October 1912 in Texarkana
Died: 10 1997, in Mexico City
20th Century Art Music, Composer Conlon Nancarrow was an American composer who took Mexican citizenship in 1955. He is remembered almost exclusively for the pieces he wrote for the player piano. He lived most of his life in complete obscurity, first coming to the music world's attention in the 1980s. Today, he is remembered as one of the most original and unusual composers of the 20th century.
Nancarrow was born in Texarkana, Arkansas. He played trumpet in a jazz band in his youth, before studying music first in Cincinnati, Ohio and later in Boston, Massachusetts with Roger Sessions, Walter Piston and Nicolas Slonimsky. Later still, he went to New York City and studied with Henry Cowell, another great iconoclast.
When the Spanish Civil War broke out, Nancarrow went to Spain to fight against Francisco Franco. While there, he joined the Communist party, as a result of which he was refused an American passport after his return. He subsequently moved to Mexico City, which remained his home until his death. Nancarrow had a machine custom built to enable him to punch the piano rolls by hand. The machine was an adaptation of one used in the commercial production of rolls, and using it was very hard work, and very slow. He also adapted the player pianos, increasing their dynamic range by tinkering with their mechanism, and covering the hammers with leather or metal so as to produce a more percussive sound.

K NOWN THROUGHOUT the musical world as some of the most significant and innovative music of the twentieth century, the music of Conlon Nancarrow remains largely unheard by the concert-going public (1) . Nancarrow acquired general recognition in 1982 when he received a five-year John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur grant. But for over forty years he lived and worked in Mexico City on a body of work consisting of over sixty pieces, which formed his series, Studies for Player Piano , (the instrument found in many homes prior to the widespread availability of sound recordings) before emerging from relative isolation through recordings of his compositions (2).
Nancarrow was born in Texarkana, Arkansas, in 1912, the son of a business man who served as mayor of Texarkana between 1927 and 1930 (3). He studied briefly at Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and later spent several years in Boston before going to Spain to fight with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in 1937 (4).
